drugs on the "forbidden" list
UPDATED: and see further Reply below:
Unfortunately both clopidogrel (Plavix, Deplat) and apixaban (Eliquis) reportedly can trigger RLS in some, but this is rare not universal. Others may recommend 'safer' alternatives which should be discussed with your doctor.
Thanks Chris. I appreciate your input.
I wouldn't actually call either of these 'forbidden', just something to be aware of.
I do wonder whether some of these occasional reports of drug x or y having made RLS worse, as in the case of these two drugs, are entirely reliable.
It's all too easy when we're stressed to blame an RLS flare up on a drug when e.g. just eating or drinking too much of something seemingly innocuous at the wrong time, or taking a different brand OTC medication, or some other event, can do the same thing. Of course, it's different if there have been numerous reports!
I cannot find anything that says Eliquis is not OK for RLS but at least 1 person on this forum said it made their RLS worse. Effindoe who was very knowledgeable said Plavix was bad for RLS and at least 1 person on this forum said it made their RLS worse although I couldn't find anything to that effect.
However there are 2 blood thinners which actually can help RLS. Clonidine and dipyridamole.
You might want to discuss these with your doctor. It has helped some people on this forum and another forum I am on and has completely eliminated RLS in some. In the winter 2022 edition of Night Walkers, the publication of RLS.org there is an article by Sergi Ferre about dipyridamole discussing the effectiveness of it in a 2 week double blind placebo controlled study showing it completely ameliorated all symptoms. The study was by Dr. Garcia Borreguero movementdisorders.onlinelib... sciencedirect.com/science/a...
