Probiotic to increase GABA and reduce glutamate

For those of you who are interested in the GABA / glutamate balance and its contribution to RLS / PLMD, here is an article that discusses the use of a probiotic to increase GABA and reduce glutamate.

The study indicates that probiotics can be used safely to ameliorate glutamate excitotoxicity mostly through increasing depleted GABA and Mg2+ and decreasing the excitatory neurotransmitter, glutamate.

Interestingly gabapentin reduces glutamate levels in the brain.

Yes, there seems to be a few medications that reduce glutamate levels, especially the anticonvulsants. As always, i'm looking for that unicorn...a non-pharmaceutical solution!

Thanks for this RCHD. It seems that the strain bifidobacterium adolescentis IPLA60004 is a useful one in reducing glutamate concentrations in the blood. Now to find it in a probiotic preparation...

Yes good point! I was overzealous to send.. sorry it wasn’t exact same. But it’s good to see people are paying more attention to the gut brain relationship. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

It was the paper that you linked that gave me the name of the strain, so thank you. Yes, the more i read, the more research i see going in the direction of gut microbiota regulation for a vast range of conditions. All very encouraging.
