I've always felt that many people coming on here actually have peripheral neuropathy rather than rls.

I'm not sure if that's what he is getting at- it's too late for my poor little brain.

But seems to makes a lot of sense.

Sounds very interesting. It seems he's saying that there are several different ways that the symptoms of RLS can occur. They all feel the same but the causes are different.

I have both primary RLS which runs in my family and also peripheral neuropathy ( which can do nothing about as the cause isn't correctable ie not Diabetes etc but an abnormal protein which a type of errant blood cell produces ) so it feels to me I must have the worst RLS ever - though I realise others will be similar.

I also know that eg sugar makes it worse and some other foods.

At least this article shows that folk out there are thinking it through.

Pregabalin helps the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. That's how I discovered it helps RLS too though the effect wore off.

Huntington's is a movement disorder?? I get there are movement elements but in my understanding it causes the death of brain cells which results in movement problems, along with all the rest, whereas with RLS the problems with Dopamine/Iron causes the movement disorder.

Also Madlegs1 I don't think its too late for you, its not the best written piece I've read and the solutions mentioned in the title are not very explicit. I think he is saying get our Iron levels right and electrical stimulation to 'the organ of the affected nerve pathways in the feet ' whatever that is supposed to be, I can't wrap my head round that.

Won't help many on this forum because they consider that the problem is purely with the brain. For many the itchy sensation in the joints is real and is caused by inflammation of the nerve receptors. This is often caused by raised blood sugar. There is a simple answer, and that is to change the diet, or for the odd occasion when you let the diet slips, and anti imflammatory medication. This method genuinely works for me, and I had suffered on and off for almost sixty years before I found the solution.

At the moment 'they' think the cause is all in the brain - but this may not be the full story. 'They' used to think for a long time that stomach ulcers were due to stress and/or excessive acid production, and then a great Australian Dr spotted that everyone had a particular bacteria in their stomachs. He had a battle to persuade the 'experts' but now, hey presto, get rid of the bacteria and the ulcers go.

Don't think 'they' have got there yet with RLS

Some have, but the small numbers who have are fighting the momentum of the establishment who are convinced medication targeting the brain is the answer - which, from the number looking for a better medication is not working.

in reply toEryl

I agree. That's what happened with stomach ulcers. the establishment was convinced they knee the answer and wouldn't listen to the new and what turned out to be the right idea. in the end the Australian guy gave himself a drink of the bacteria to cause himself an ulcer before anyone would listen. I expect there are several causes. i am convinced my peripheral neuropathy makes made my already established rls worse. it is usually worst in my most numb leg. i hope we can just keep plugging away and not allow those who think they know - even though they have the best of intentions - to stop researching and keep an open mind

Thank you for posting this. I've replied to Madlegs reply to you.

Go on a ketogenic diet, be that 'low carb', 'Paleo', 'HFLC' or one of the other varieties. You can go a long way by just avoiding sugar and sweetened foods.

Interesting reading. Would point out the author's credentials indicate he is a Doctor of Chiropractic, not an MD. (Each profession has its place. Not interested in debating the two.)

yes, that's the way it works. the treatment for ulcers now is a course of antibiotics with acid suppression tablets for a short while. the antibiotics are very specific as the bacteria are tough. as far as i recall the mechanism is that the bacteria called helicobacter cause high and continuous acid production.

it was fascinating watching it evolving over my career and no one believed the guy at first.

i so hope that one day someone will think out of the box and find something similar for RLS
