Here is the paper by the international RLS study group (IRLSSG) on the use of opioids for RLS. It is authored by Silber et al, dr John Winkelman being the last=senior author:

mayoclinicproceedings.org/a...

The group has written an update, according to one of re co-authors, but it hasn't yet been published. I guess with the tsunami of covid papers it is difficult to find room for other subjects.

Dr Winkelman is currently carrying out a study on the long term effects of opioids for RLS. I am one of the subjects as is Joolsg and probably several others on this forum.

Thanks for the link to Mayo clinic info on RLS and for being in a study. It is one of the better current reports I have seen. Hope your case is controlled well. Cudos for helping others with RLS.

I saw that study. Would fit right in. Been on Opiods for 25yrs. Luckily with same doctor. Dread the day he moves on and need to have "the talk" with whoever I see next.

Thank you for your reply. I have been on opiods for nerve damage for years. none of my drs believe in rls and opiods. I am on it for nerve damage. I HAVE TO FIGHT EVERY YEAR MY INSURANCE TO GET MY OXYCONTIN COVERED FOR A YEAR. I AM SCARED TO DEAGET INTO THIS STUDY YOU SPOOK ABOUT. I AM SCARED TO DEATH I WILL BE CUT OFF. HOW WOULD I GET INTO THE STUDY YOU SPOKE AGAIN. AND MORE DRS HERE ARE CUTTING OFF OPIODS. DONT THINK I WOULD MAKE IT WITHOUT HELP. EXCUSE MY TYPING. MY KEYBOARD NOW HAS A MIND OF ITS OWN. THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP.

Keep yourself updated with current information on treatment here in the US and in Europe. Steer clear of red flags that would indicate you may be abusing your pain medication. Advocate for yourself. If possible bring in a close family member who knows your situation and can double down on your need for relief. Though in the end it all depends on your doctor and how open minded they are. It's a tricky situation. It's difficult to switch doctors as well, when the first words out of your mouth are "hey doc I need opiods". Not a great ice breaker.

Hang tough.

thank you. I wish the people that got hooked on opiods years ago would not have ruined it for people that legitimately needs them now.

Things always swing in extremes. For 20 years pills were being handed out like tic tacs with disastrous results. Of course the natural response was a near complete clamp down on opiate pain relievers. The pendulum will swing back some the other way. Just is going to take some time.
