Hi Maureen133. Take a look at the treatment options at rlshelp.org and

rls-uk.org/

Also search for gentle iron through the search engine here.

There is lots of information which will enable you (along with your Dr) to make informed decisions on various treatments.

Hi Barb I am thrilled for you. May I ask what kind of iron? A lot of people on here take their iron on an empty stomach about an hour before bed. They report better sleep by doing this.

I've started taking iron ferrous bisglycinate 20mg and take around 1 hour before I go to bed, I've had rls since childhood and chronicly for the past 20 years... I'd tried iron several years back but then read on this site that it should be the ferrous bisglycinate so gave it a try and then only took 2 ropinerole , it's a few weeks now and to be honest I feel I could go down to 1 mg ropinerole but don't want to rush things so will keep going for another few weeks then try cutting down again. I was very sceptical because I've done all the usual things like cutting out alcohol, cafine, processed foods etc but nothing worked. For the first time in ages I can stay up a bit later as the side effects of the ropinerole is greatly reduced due to less tablets, i an more awake in the mornings and no daytime episodes so far.......feeling very positive!

Yes they started me off on 0.5 mg and steadily increased the dose. The Doc prescribed up to 4mg per night but I seldom took more than 3mg. The side effects are so terrible, extreme nausea , if I took 2mg it didn't work but 3mg ensured a good sleep as long as I took around 7pm but need to go lie down within half an hour and spent the rest of the evening feeling very sick but did get a good sleep. The iron tablets have deffo made a difference in my case. I've been in ropinerole for over 8 years, repeat prescription and no regular follow up from the doc, they seem disinterested so when I stumbled in this site I've realised how many other people are in the same boat and it's great to share experiences . I thought I'd exhausted all the things to try but I must admit at 59 years old I'm still learning lol ....I thought I'd be stuck on medication for life given my chronic rls but over the past few weeks my life is improving with the iron and magnesium so fingers crossed. The ropinerole is a nasty drug but up till now it was the only relief I got so the side effects seemed worthwhile.

Well done Barbara. It is fantastic that you have managed to reduce your Ropinerole dose. It can be a very effective medication but the more you take the greater the risk of augmentation and you are already on a reasonably large dose. I hope you continue to get good relief on the lower dose with iron.
