Any successful treatments for dizziness? Botox injection?

My sister is virtually immobile due to PSP and suffers with dizziness, sometimes for hours on end. She has lost her eyesight so the dizziness causes her to think she is falling.

We encourage her to drink water and try to support her neck which tends to arch. She has previously been prescribed prochlorperazine and cyclizine but neither have helped. Her consultant suggested injecting botox in her neck may help. Has anyone had experience of this?

Thank you.

Hi sorry to learn about your sister's immobilty and dizziness problem. Hope the consultant have ruled out OH and other possible reasons.

...Her consultant suggested injecting botox in her neck may help...Please ask the consultant what risks are there? Or have you already asked her? If yes, what did she say. Let's know. Best wishes to your self and your sister.

Thank you for your reply and help PineEater. You mentioned OH as a possible cause. What is OH?

Regards

Hi

OH means

Orthostatic Hypotension Best wishes

Ah thank you. I’ve never heard that expression before. Unfortunately it is not the cause. The dizziness can occur spontaneously whilst sitting, standing or even lying down.

Thank you once more

Beachut100It is still necessary to rule out its contribution. Further, did the consultant get the Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), test done? Further , it may be side effect of the medicines she is taking. What medicines is she taking? Best wishes

Thank you for your comments PineEater. Unfortunately the test cannot be done due to her blindness and the medication is not the cause. Kind regards 🙏

Beachut100Hi. Is her BP normal? Is she taking any medicines for relief from any medicines. Please write what medicines is she taking even if you think medication is not the cause?

Further, please let's know what does she mean when she complains of dizziness? Best wishes

sometimes an upper cervical chiropractic adjustment of the Atlas joint can help tremendously with vertigo or dizziness. Especially If there was a previous head trauma that could have thrown the atlas joint off. It's not a traditional chiropractor it's a special upper cervical chiropractor. And it's a computerized very targeted adjustment.

My husband had Lewy body dementia and was getting botox in his neck to relax the muscles. It's hard to say whether it was helpful or not. He passed away 4 years after a diagnosis of Parkinson's which was later changed to Lewy body 2 years later. I have a friend who has this dizziness and she was told that she needed chiropractic treatment due to head trauma. So based on a previous response above, that might be the route you should take. She said that the treatment was helping.

My husband had botox injections in his hand and arm several times over the course of 2 years. He had no bad side effects other than temporary increases in blood sugar readings for his diabetes soon after an injection. He suffered from CBD which made his left hand/arm rigid, causing painful muscle contractions. In the beginning we thought the botox helped but as time went on it didn't seem to make a difference. I think it would be worth trying for your sister and I send heartfelt hope that if she does have the injections her quality of life will improve. Bless your heart for helping her.

Mums dizzy all the time nothing that has been suggested helps and nothing much has been offered from neurologist.

KelmistyHi. Please let's know what does your mum exactly mean when she complains of dizziness. Also, what medicines is she on. What about OH as well? Best wishes to your self and your mom.

She says it’s like being drunk all the time, everything spins day in and day out. Gets worse when she has a UTI, she says it’s exhausting and hates it - when she can speak.

She’s on Sinamet for her arm, pain patches, paracetamol and laxatives nothing has been diagnosed for the dizziness as there’s nothing that will stop it.

KelmistyHi. Please note there is a difference between experiencing drunk all the time and everything spinning day in and day out. Feeling both the sensations together seems a bit difficult to understand. Further, when one has a uti , then inflammation caused by the infection may cause dizziness because of the resultant changes in blood pressure.

Please note that Sinemet has a potential to cause or worsen dizziness. So, tapering it off can be helpful. What are the contents of the pain patches and laxatives ? Best wishes.

Thanks but your comments about how my mum described her symptoms are not helpful,

KelmistyPlease note that feeling both the sensations together seems a bit difficult to understand from the point of view of biochemical pathways. However, some people do report of feeling these sensations together as your mom does. If common tests and treatments for dizziness and vertigo are not helpful, then tapering off sinemet can be tried to see if that helps. Best wishes to you and your mom.
