Wheelchair funding UK

Hello,

My mum who is 79yo and in advanced stages of CBD and has been in nursing home for last 7 months needs a new wheelchair.

It's been advised that she needs a much more comprehensive wheelchair than the basic one she has and that the cost will be over £3k and will need to be privately funded.

Does anyone know if there any funding options that I should consider exploring? Mum is waiting for CHC re-assessment which is imminent and should hopefully be approved given her deterioration.

If there are none, I will certainly look at 2nd hand options - but curious if anyone knows of any leasing options?

Thanks,

Josh

This should be funded by the local healthcare system .Our system was called wheelchair services.

Ask her GP to refer to the wheelchair service, I believe every county has one. We ended up privately buying a basic one as after 15 weeks of waiting it became urgent

It depends on your local area. In my area wheelchair services explicitly excluded anyone in a nursing home unless they were being taken OUT of the home for several hours per day!! I was horrified. So we bought privately using the money saved from not having to pay nursing home fees when CHC was awarded. There are rental services for wheelchairs too that you can find online but again you have to pay privately. Other parts of the country appear to be much better.

Not what you're looking for?
