My 71 year old husband had his diagnosis for PSP confirmed in April 2023 after 4 years of care based on diagnosis of Parkinsons. Our new hospice nurse is great, really supportive. She has applied for Continuing Heath Care on his behalf. The zoom interview is on Tuesday.
I see on this forum some of you have been successful in getting this funding for PSP sufferers. Have you any tips on how to get the funding please, I hear it is hard to get?
My mum was assessed for this in 2021 and it was refused. She was then reassessed in 2022 and it was approved. I'd say the difference between the two was the care home managers involvement in the assessment. You need someone who is on the ball with the assessment process and it shouldn't be the case but you really have to emphasise the deterioration and how much time/care is required.
I was on the call both times and in general my mums needs were the same (obviously the nature of the disease is progressive decline) but the assessor tried to push back a few times but the care manager was adamant in terms of the scoring.
unfortunately my mum was approved in the November and passed away in March so didn't get very much CHC funding in the end.
Good luck with this Catrax. I'm sorry I can't assist as we are about to apply with the help of specialist nurse so will be keeping my fingers crossed for you and would very much like to hear outcome and feedback x
Firstly very best wishes for your CHC funding meeting. Secondly, if you've got his nurse on board and hopefully also taking part in the interview that is a huge help.
You will need to stress the the bad days, the unpredictable days, the lows and how he has deteriorated. If his nurse has completed the form she will have already given this information. When we did it, the answers were graded a to d, d being the worst. Our nurses applied for fast track and this was immediately granted with an interview assessment six months later which our senior nurse attended with me.
My husband had the CHC assessment last week and was unsuccessful. Both the social worker and the CHC assessor were trying their best to get the funding for him, but he didn’t score enough moderates to qualify. However, we were told that in six months or a year his condition might have worsened enough to qualify and we can try again. Next time they would use this assessment as the baseline.
So I’m hopeful that we will eventually get it. Good luck I hope you get the funding.
concentrate on the bad days only. Imagine what would happen without you there to catch, pick up, feed, dress, etc., etc. Tell all the tales you can think of. My best one was Steve raiding the medicine cabinet, just for a nose, but none of us knew if he had taken anything. Obviously every fall must be highlighted, where and when and every medical care he gets, even if was only once.
My husband has CBD, we were lucky and he was fast tracked due to a sudden decline, we are now awaiting further review as our 6 months is up. I believe It has to be based on nursing needs not so much care needs, things like choking, seizures, breathing problems, food cramming that can lead to choking, if diabetic, blood glucose monitoring, sorting and administering medication, safety ie needing 24 hour monitoring, skin conditions or risk such as incontinence and maintaining pressure areas. Go onto the government website and put in applying for CHC there are some good tips and I think there is a template somewhere on the internet which shows the scoring. You must base it on the worst day.
