Dry eyes

My husband has dry eyes from PSP and it seems every time we fly, he has a bad reaction for about four days. Does the flying make his eyes worse?

So interesting that you connect dry eyes with PSP. My mother had dry eyes for years before being diagnosed... just connecting the dots.

I think that all that filtered air and blowing aircon on a plane is dehydrating for skin so must also affect the eyes.

‘People with Parkinson's Disease or PSP blink less often than normal. Blinking helps protect the front part of the eye which is very sensitive. A reduced blink will make your eyes feel dry or sore. You Ophthalmologist (eye doctor) might suggest you try artificial tears to lubricate your eyes and reduce irritation’

My husband was prescribed Hyabak eye drops which helps with his dry eyes. Hope this helps.

Yes , PSP with the decreased blinking , other health conditions that may also be involved , certain meds , climate , pollution , decreased hydration , age , other environmental causes , etc.... all contribute toeye irritation .

There are definitely prescription meds , but for many people , TheraTears drops which come in a typical OTC eye drop bottle format , ( packaged in a box in the same color scheme as the next mentioned variation ) and even better , the preservative free variation of TheraTears which comes as "Sterile Single-Use Vials"packaged in a blue, purple , and white box .can be really helpful ! The vials can definitely be used several times if kept clean. It's a rather costlier product than some , on the whole and can sometimes be hard to find in the drugstores , Target , Walmart , etc... as they're in high demand , but I would be surprised if you couldn't locate them. They can be used without any limitations day and night , as often as you want , and can be extremely helpful . They also will not interact with any other products that your husband might be using.

You might want to try the bottled, preserved ( as is typical for most eye drops ) but I've had many people report stinging and intolerance due to the preservatives , which typically are the main reason for an inflammatory reaction. Luckily , for this symptom of PSP , there are products that can make a positive difference !!

Yes flying is likely to make dry eyes worse, air on planes is very dry and being blown/circulated makes it worse. Try using moisture eye drops before, during and after the flight.

I just went to a neuro-opthamologist and was told because of the PSP I don’t blink often enough. She recommended OTC lubricant eye drops 4x daily plus OTC dry eye ointment overnight. It’s working but she says most patients don’t like the nighttime goo and quit taking it pretty quickly, which is what I’ve done.
