Hi to all, lately Kathy's eyes are getting more iritated by psp and non blinking

I give her eye drops and wears dark glasses outside but has to go to bed early

to give her eyes a break, it's like a cycle each day and night. She has been to a

optician and prescribed Hylo-Fresh .also i have tried Poly-Tears eye drops,

I would like to know if anyone has tried different eye drops with some success.

Thanks Peter

I use an eye ointment on Larry at night. It is 94 or 97% petroleum jelly and 3% mineral oil. It coats the eye protecting it from PSP people not keeping their eyes fully closed during sleep. In the morning I use an eye gel drop that is a lubricant. I also do hot compresses morning and night for 5 minutes. More compresses can be used during the day. This was on the recommendation on a neuro ophthalmologist.

I would ask about an ointment as Jeff166 suggests. The problem with drops is they are like tears, it's a short term fix as they will either run out the corners of the eye or go thru the natural tear ducts. An ointment would stay on the eye longer.

My son, from the get go, had difficulty with glare (beside his double vision) inside the house. His prescription prism glasses had a slightly dark coat (unusual for use indoors). It helped. He also had a pair of prescription prism DARK sunglasses for outdoor use.

I cleaned his eyes each morning with baby shampoo and later with OcuSoft lid scrub. About every three hours we put REFRESH TEARS in his eyes. ALWAYS BEFORE GOING TO BED.

He was under the care of a Kaiser Permanente Ophthalmologist. He also underwent removal of a cataract from one of his eyes. It helped.

I found that all we could do was to ALLEVIATE the discomfort for a few hours at a time. My son was always grateful for the relief.

Hi

We have a real regime for Mum's eyes and been referred to the Eye Hospital because we felt we weren't getting anywhere at the local hospital. It is still not brilliant but she doesn't complain at much and her eyelids are definitely less inflamed and her eye lashes have grown back and the Prof says her tear film is better than it was. When we first saw the Prof she thought we were overloading Mum's eyes with ointments, gels & drops so these were cut back, so now she uses Hyloforte drops 4 times a day, Clinitas Eye Gel twice a day, Xalin Night Ointment at night. We use an Optase moist heat mask everyday for 10 minutes and bathe the eyes with Blephasol afterwards. We also had a course of antibiotics (sorry can't remember the name but can find out) which were for 3 days for 3 weeks (so 9 tablets over 3 weeks). So far we haven't had to repeat them because the tear film has improved but they can be repeated every 3 months.

Mum also wears wrap around dark glasses virtually all the time, inside & out and these help to keep the humidity around the eyes and stop air currents drying the eyes out.

I hope you find something that helps Kathy as I know this is one of the things which has made Mum most miserable. Good luck.

Eye drops or eye gels good for the eyes as it keeps the eyes dehydrated morning and evening is advisable, also have glasses for watching TV or light.

I use the eye ointment that Jeff suggested for my own dry eyes. I've probably tried all of the drops, etc. I find the simple ointment works the best for me (any brand). I'm in the US so I use the Walmart brand. I like it better because it has more mineral oil in it and goes in easier for me and it's cheaper. I know it makes my eyes feel much better and is much longer lasting than any of the drops. Be sure to use it at night because it causes your eyes to blur. If you use any drops during the day, stick with the gel drops because, as Dadshelper says the others don't last for more than a few minutes.

Thanks for your help,I think that eye drops with a oil in it will last longer

the Hylo-Fresh drops seems the best., Kathy does close her eyes when

asleep, that's when they recover ,it's all the same with psp the body is

breaking down slowly, and you have to adjust to changing conditions

Thanks Peter

Hi Peter,

We use Systane lubricant eye drops during the day and Systane eye ointment at bedtime. The Dr. also has him use baby shampoo to wash his eyes/face in the morning. Somedays we include warm compresses. Most days it appears to help.
