When communicating with my mom became impossible although her mind was sharp, we turned first to a brand new iPad. It’s didn’t work. It was way too sensitive for how rigid her fingers were. We then tried a Lingraphica communication device from her speech therapist and that was way to simple for what my mom wanted to say (eg. How are you? I need a drink). So I got this idea from Breaking Bad of all places, and this was a life saver. My whole family and her doctor used it with her. Now it became a lot slower over the years, but my mom had difficulty speaking from very early on, day 4 years into the disease. With this, we had very complicated discussions about taxes, her dreams, how she was feeling. I just wanted to share. It was the only thing that helped her feel normal and connected to other people.

Amazing! So how did you use this? Would she point to the letters and you would write it down?
Yes she would point and we would repeat the letter out loud before moving on. We did it in our heads, but you could write it down. My mom was able to have full on conversations with this and we could guess the word to move it along faster. But she did everything w this board. I made it out of paper and contact paper so we could fold it, clean it, and travel w it
Hi, I recently shared what we used to overcome communication difficulties and it was something similar. On the reverse side we had names of family and friends and phrases that my husband would have frequently used which was a great help as well.
Hope your mum is doing as well as can be.
Best wishes, Nanny857xx
