Hi folks

Late Edit

I have made a mistake.

The information I found was for Ireland.

citizensinformation.ie/en/h...

There is still a way of avoiding Tax on Nursing Home Fees in the UK. But, its not quite so easy.

forums.moneysavingexpert.co...

Best to you all.

Hi Yvonne

Waiting for the shoe to drop...

Liz is steadily losing weight. She is only 36kg now. She struggles to communicate much, but when she does it is clear that she is still mentally present.

I feel a bit gutted when I think about it.

I keep myself busy doing things. The last two weeks I have been investigating a simple growing light system so that I get home grown fresh herbs and salads through the winter. I got so fed up with the lack of them this Winter.

How is it going?

I think of you and send hugs.

Warmly

Kevin

Lovely!

I opted for a quiet holiday and visited Liz extra.

My family don't really get caring. How often have we seen that on these pages?!

Your wonderfu, do take care of yourself.

Hugs to you.

Kevin you have been amazing through Liz’s illness, you are really an amazing man Kevin, not sure if George could of looked after me, the way you have done for Liz, lots of respect for you xxxx

Thanks, Yvonne, that means a lot to me.

I don't think I did / am doing, that well... 'Best I can' has to be good enough. I am so aware that Liz would have made a better job of the care... perhaps not so well when it came to battling for decent services.

Hugs

I seem to be about recovered from pneumonia. The medication killed it out in a week but the fatigue can linger for months. I am only beginning to feel like myself again.

Good post considering it's that time of year again.

I know in the US our tax laws can vary greatly state-to-state. When I was doing in-home care for dad, upon the advice of my tax person, we (wife and I) set up an in-home daycare like entity. The tax rules for it allowed us to deduct part of the home's living space, utilities and other expenditures off our taxes. It wasn't a huge amount but every little bit helps, you do need to keep accurate records though. I also recall being able to deduct so much per mile for transporting Dad to medical appts. I am not sure if this would work if you're caring for a spouse since you'd probably be filing a joint return.

Hi Ron

I hope everything is going fairly OK for you.

Here in the UK people caring for their own are given a special little corner in hell by the government... no tax relief. ( smiling) They have promised to improve things... We will wait and see.

Actually the person paying for the home can claim the Tax relief. It looks to me that all of the tax on that money can be claimed back.

It can be worth quite a bit.

Take care

Best to you

As usual Kevin you are the provider of vital information for all on this site and I thank you for that. My heart goes out to you and Liz, it is a long and difficult journey for you both. I'm pleased you are keeping yourself busy trying to solve the problem of growing herbs and salads out of season, totally get that. I miss my allotment but devoting so much time and energy to growing produce I simply have to give away is a step too far so I'll have to be satisfied with my flower and shrub garden, no room for veg. It's been a long wet winter hadn't it Kevin, pleased to see the days grow longer but still plenty of time for the white stuff to fall from the sky but with all of the weird weather the world is experiencing who knows what it might bring. Enough of my ramblings. Take care dear man.

Sending love to you both

Hi Kate

I live in awe of anyone with the time and energy to manage a full allotment. My garden is about a half allotment and it has ponds and a paved area and so the growing area is maybe half that again and I still can't keep up!

Yes, the weird. Keeping the soil moist this last two summers has been difficult and this Winter hasn't been cold enough to kill the bugs... I do worry a lot about the environment.

Thanks for the love. I will tell Liz, she remembers you well.

Hugs to you and I hope you are finding your way.

You have had a long journey of caring and helping others Kevin. I hope you can receive comfort from others. I am relieved my husband was spared a long spell of advanced illness.

These tax reliefs sounded too good to be true to me. It seems the website you found is about tax rules in Ireland. I can find no evidence of these rules applying in UK sadly. Might be worth double checking.

Kevin_1 profile image
Kevin_1 in reply to Fiona_S

Ooops! (Embarassed)

Yes, it does not apply in the UK.

However, there is a way to avoid Tax for Care Home Fees in the UK and I have edited my post to include that.

Thank you for being so observant.

I hope you are doing 'OK'.

Got me all excited but having spent 41 mins talking to various tax offices in the country and ending up with a senior inspector it seems this only applies in Ireland. What a pity but only serves to confirm how badly treated we are in this country. Don't let this discourage you and keep up the good work.

Hi WR

Apologies - I altered the post this morning.

There is still a way of getting tax relief on fees and I have put a link in my original post.

As I sit here doing my Tax returns (just in time) I am so aware of the pain of talking to the IR.

So more apologies.

Wishing you the best

Kevin

Some professions are unfairly subject to taxes. I wouldn't touch the medical field at all if I were to impose taxes because these people make a considerable contribution to humanity, and no one likes taxes. I use paystubs ( thepaystubs.com/ ) to deal with this kind of problem, and these tools help me a lot in the fight against taxes. Have you heard anything about it? If you haven't, I suggest you do because it's pretty reliable and effective when it comes to this kind of issue. I am sure that such information will be helpful to many on this forum.
