Definitely 110% attend!!!!! Make sure you have a meeting first with the matron/manager to ensure you are both on the same level!! Let us know how it goes 🤞 x

I would advise you to make a friendly approach to all involved in the assessment. Nurses who look after your wife, the assessor who is a highly qualified healthcare professional. The council Social worker who will be on your side. There are also plenty of links on this site to advice on the review process. Kevin has some good links.

Hi edgie

It is a scored assessment. Follow Jeff's link and do spend some time reading so that you know the assessment process. It is not difficult and the NHS guidelines encourage full participation in the process as well as the scoring. I argue the scoring as there is a propensity for them to score low.

Having said that, given this is a degenerative disorder I assume your wife is worse now than when she was awarded CHC. So you are probably on safe ground.

A key thing to remember her "needs" are those which she would need to have met if no care was going in." In other words they cannot say, "The nursing home is meeting that need and so it does not count."

Good luck.

Best

Kevin

Hi edgie.

We had CHC withdrawn after 2 years because P`s needs were not deemed to be primarily of a nursing nature. Although he died a year ago I am still waiting to be told if we will be granted an IRP (Independent Review Panel in another area).

Emphasise ALL his needs, speak to all the professionals involved in his care, OT, SALT, Care staff, GP, neurologist etc - and get letters of support from them if possible. Ask for copies of care records from the care home and read them thoroughly - there were several anomalies which I challenged. When I went to local appeal I took a representative from Beacon and copies of PSPA booklets for professionals.

Be well prepared and don`t be intimidated. However I did all of the above and we were still refused, so I am probably not the best person to advise you !

Hi I am a nursing home Matron/Manager and have been involved in these reviews. I think you should definitely be there so you can have input and make them aware of how you see your wife's condition changing. I would say that it is not about the care that is needed but nursing input, so emphasise the need for nurses to be closely involved. In my experience the care side such as washing, dressing feeding etc they will say can be done by trained care staff making it social care not nursing care. I personally don't think this is right or fair especially in a degenerative condition. Do as someone else said meet with the Manager or nurses whoever will be the person involved and find out what they are going to be saying. Ask about any other professional input such as SALT or dietician etc. I hope it all goes well it is a stress you guys don't need when dealing with this terrible condition Best wishes x

Would definitely recommend you ask the nursing home to let you go through your wife's daily care records / care action plan for the last X months. Please make a note of every item written down - or implied - which shows she needs the care of a qualified health professional and not just "social care". You'll need to link that item to the CHC criteria.

Some nursing homes and some nurses have never received training in CHC matters. Some nursing homes keep their care records in ways that don't help ANYONE work out whether a patient meets the CHC criteria or not.

How long has your wife been in the nursing home. I am asking due to the strain of care for my husband who has PSP. Also what is a CHS review. Wishing you well. My heart is with you. Connie
