Mom is doing ok - we are on a cruise currently; so no room for complaint. 😌 ... but, she has been coughing a lot the last few weeks. At first, I thought she has picked something up from one of the grandkids ... I don’t think it’s that. I think I will give her some cough medicine at night; I hope that’s the right choice - Sleeping the same stateroom, I’m noticing more I suppose.

I hope all is going okay with your Mom overall. Blessings x

Hi bazooka

Hope you both enjoyed your lovely trip.

Coughing was one of mum's early symptoms she used to have a lot of mucus build up . Only once was it a chest infection.

Now when she starts with a cough I just give her Benylin mucus cough medicine and after a couple of days it clears.

We are in the middle of our trip now, and Mom is truly enjoying herself. Because I’m sleeping with her in the same stateroom - I’m

Noticing the coughing at night. I’m going to give her some cough medicine, and see if it helps.

Yes dad coughed a lot. We tried various things to help control it but nothing really helped for long.

Hi bazooka 111!

Our experience:

Persistent cough. Use the syrup recommended by the physician.

To avoid in the diet: coffee, carbonated beverages as pop or soda (or eliminate the gas by agitation before giving it to the patient) as well as chocolate, orange, lemon or grapefruit juice, helps.

I have heard that some cut onions and put the pieces on a plate next to the patient's table. The smell is unpleasant but the vapors of the onion seem to help calm the unruly cough. (?!)

Hug an luck.

My husband has CBD he had a lot of coughing.it turned out that he was having silent aspiration of fluids into his lungs. He can't drink fluids anymore. He has a peg tube now for fluids. I don't know if your mom has this. It's just something to keep in mind. Hope you enjoyed your vacation!

I am curious -- how did you confirm aspiration of fluids into his lungs? Is this something I ask our primary care? Neurologist? Mom coughs drinking water -- in fact, this week while on vacation, every time she ate watermelon, she would cough as if she was drinking a glass of water. I am expecting that "thickening" is on the horizon ... hmmm.... Im just learning about all of this. We just returned home today, and it will be the best seven days with my Mom I have spent in a very long time. Truly .. the best. #noregrets

Water was the first thing we had to stop with mum. She was ok if I added fruit juice to it but even that's stopped now she just coughs far too much with the thin liquid. She has started drinking milk shakes and smoothies and at the moment she is fine on these. She's also ok with hot drinks such as cappuccino, hot chocolate and horlicks at bedtime. She loves a cup of tea but even that's starting to get a bit tricky.

My mom started actually saying, “I am choking on water, who does that?” Smoothies is a great idea, give me a reason to use our Vitamix. I appreciate this suggestion.

Welcome back from your making memories trip!

My husband (CBD) was having trouble with coughing, mostly at night and bringing up phlegm. Our doctor sent him to a Voice therapy specialist and they performed a swallow test. He ended up with a dx of moderate Oropharyngeal Dysphagia. Meaning that the food wasn’t passing through as it should. Treatment is 2 times a week where electrodes are placed on the outside of his throat and he swallows wet food (applesauce or pudding). With each swallow the electrodes pulsate his throat muscles and with each swallow the electrodes intensify. We’ve been to about 8 sessions so far and the treatment is working. No more coughs at night but he will occasionally cough up phlegm when eating. It’s better but not completely gone. I’m not sure if this would be an option for you but I wanted to mention it.

Take care from I SewBears

I am going to schedule an appointment and look into this ... she is coughing a lot, especially with thin liquids. Appreciate the insight.

My husband had a swallow study done with fluoscopy. That showed fluids just dumping into his lungs
