Hi mum who has had PSP for eight years now seems to be unable to open her mouth at times as if the jaw is stuck. Any one else with this problem?

Cannot open mouth
Hi Kaylewis, It sounds like another muscle has decided to go haywire. I’m sorry your mum is experiencing lockjaw. How painful it must be! I googled lockjaw just now and got a lot of hits on things to do that might help. I wish you and your mum all the best.
There have been several posts in the past relating to jaw locking. Topics range from how to handle oral care to feeding issues. It definitely could be a PSP symptom.

I haven't posted since Mum passed away but couldn't leave your post unanswered. My mum had the same problem. If your mum's mouth opens even a little then a Bedi shield would help. I've tried posting a picture but failed so here's a link. It'll help with mouth hygiene and when suction is required. All the best.
Get an opinion from your GP or consultant. It could well be that Botox injections might be suggested. I don't know, but that's what comes to my mind, it's to do with stiffness in the jaw muscles I think. Poor darling, this is such a terrible disease.
Thankyou but too poorly to travel now .
Dear Kaylewis, of course, I do not know the state of your dear mother, but you know, you can just never tell for sure with PSP. My dad survived for fourteen years and wa bedridden for the last five years of that. I couldn't get him into a hospice because all the medics were saying that with PSP one can never be sure. See if you can get the GP to visit you. Just get an opinion because it really is worth it if you can make life pleasanter for them. A Botox injection can quite easily be done by a qualified person. X
Hi my brother is in his 9 th year with psp he opens his mouth just a little now, as never had a lockjaw symptom, but very psp with the muscles in the mouth, such dreaded disease. Take care. Nettie
