Urgency to open bowels

Hi,

My dad has CBD & over the last couple of months or so he has the feeling he needs to open his bowels. Despite being on bowel medication he doesn't always go (sometimes for 2 days) however, the feeling remains. He can be taken to the toilet 10-12 times a day (with nothing happening)

Does anyone know if this is common please?

Thank you

Hi this is a normal thing with Psp, it brings back so many memories, constipation is normal, well it was with my husband. Sorry can’t be more helpful, big hugs. Yvonne xxxx

My mum has this and was prescribed laxido medication suggested by incontinence team which will make bowel movement easier for constipation. Also making sure he has plenty of fluids is important and soft foods in his diet will help too.

Constipation is one of the symptoms as the disease progresses. My father never had any problems with bowel movement until his PSP diagnosis. After that, it was a daily problem. He had to be given enema several times. Giving more fluids may help. But, the real problem is neurological. Really sorry to hear about your dad's situation. This brings back memories of what my own dad went through.

My mum has CBD and often feels the need to go to the toilet “properly” but when she does sometimes she “can’t go” as nothing happens. When she does go, however, she really does go! We thought it might be more psychological than anything else as she does say it every few days. Good luck, this disease is horrific for all involved 😢

Constipation, or crankipation as I call it (leaves you miserable) is a reality with PSP and CBD. Sometimes it can be two-three days before a BM. If it lasts over three days, then you'll need medical intervention. There are enemas and suppositories that will help in the short term. I add psyllium fibre laxative to my daily smoothie. My MDS says it is safe to do so.

My husband has CBD and has problems with constipation. He has seen a gastroenterologist. He was referred for pelvic floor exercises. The therapist recommended a daily colon massage. Since we started doing the daily colon massage, he usually has a good bowel movement every two days.

Hi,

We added Miralax to my husband's morning coffee and there are no more constipation issues. Generic brands work just as well.
