Diarrhoea for 7 weeks

My mum has had PSP for 7 yrs and until recently was doing ok! Mobility more difficult but manages around their bungalow. She can still talk but slower and more difficult, and she chokes a bit even with thickened drinks. She had a big GI bleed at Christmas, totally unexpectedly, but had recovered well from that. My dad is her carer. He really struggles with it all. The massive problem now is diarrhoea for 7 weeks! It’s so degrading for her and she keeps having accidents because she is not quick enough to the toilet. Gp has referred her on cancer 2 week wait to see a consultant. They say it’s negative for infections and they don’t think it’s constipation as she doesn’t complain of tummy pain. I read a lot and I’m a nurse myself, about constipation and PSP, but not a lot about diarrhoea, has anyone else heard of it! Does having PSP cause diarrhoea ???

Hoping for a cure as it’s their golden wedding anniversary next weekend and I would love her to be more comfortable for their party, thanks

More on this site have constipation but some, like my husband, have diarrhoea. He has died now. No-one came up with an answer. I managed it with immodiam as needed. It is awful but the difficulties some have with constipation sounds worse.

Sorry not to be more positive.

I have noticed it as well. I always ask mom if her stomach is hurting or cramping and she always tells me no. I give her pepto. Bismal. About twice a week to try and harden her stool some. It seems to work but then always goes back to diarrhea. I have gotten the port a potty for her and it has helped with getting her to it without that many accidents. Hopefully someone can tell us if there is something else thar works.

has her diet changed @ 7 weeks ago? Any seasonal food/fruit/meat related allergies? Have you considered talking with a nutritionist to get her optimum diet designed?

Hello K,. For what it's worth I put diarrhoea in rhe search window here and saw 6-7 relevant posts. Sounds like its a possible PSP issue? but good that your mum's doc is checking to rule out cancer etc..

Good Luck!

My dear hubby Leon who passed on Saturday, had constipation and diarrhoea, has P.S.P. the diarrhoea got much worse when he had a PEG tube fitted, he spent 3 weeks in hospital as it was just pouring out of him. They changed his feed mix, but he still had a mixture of both constipation and diarrhoea, so thinking it may have been a side effect of P.S.P. too. Hugs to you

Hi Kbaker1!

Is she using a PEG?.

Perhaps when using a PEG, some prepared and packaged food containing some additive to which it shows rejection is being used.

Hug and luck.

Luis
