Yes. Chris lost weight throughout. We saw a dietician and put him onto eating all the things we had always rationed - full cream milk, cheese, puddings - whatever he wanted.

It slowed the decline but then he couldn't eat well and lost weight quicker.

Hi Greens

This is a hot topic for me. Liz has PSP with some element s of CBD. She maintained her weight very well until she could not open her mouth properly.

Now her food intake is poor and she has a lack of appetite. This is common at her stage.

She gets high cal. formula in her drinks, yet is still loosing weight.

I had a discussion with one of the senior nurses managing her care and she wondered whether there is a nutrient absorption problem associated with her condition.

I have not been able to find any information on this. It may just be it is an unexplained area of these illnesses.

Does your Mum have appetite?

Sorry my post is not more helpful.

Hi Kevin thank you not sure if my first text went so apologies if duplicating. your post is interesting Mum has been loosing a kg at least every 4 weeks for probably the last 12 months plus she had a loss of appetite and we therefore started making all meals n sitting with her while she ate not always a pleasant experience if she was having a mood swing when food was thrown at us. But when the GP prescribed the night med to help mood n sleep it also helped increase appetite and she is eating everything and anything but still loosing weight I will pursue and obviously post if I get anywhere take care x

Dad has lost weight slowly but last 4-5 months the loss has gotten worse, nearly 40 lbs. He did gain a few pounds back when a supplement drink was added to his diet. Looking at him I'd say it's mostly muscle loss, he doesn't move hardly at all anymore.

Valerie has PSP and CBD and has steadily lost weight over the last 2 years - from over 16 st to under 10 ! Until recently she ate well but still lost.

My philosophy now is let her have what she enjoys - healthy or not. She may well live on creamy cheesecake and salmon mousse - so what !!!

This cruel disease gives no pleasure so let's give our loved ones something that does.

Dan has lost over 23kg (51lb) in the last 7 months. His appetite varies. At first it was a good thing. He is a big biker type ( motorcyclist, Harley Davidson rider) and had a big tummy. He actually looks great, but now I have to be concerned. He feeds himself with foods easy to pick up and handle. Sometimes he seems to lose concentration . The time it can take a PSP patient to eat may be tough for them. Dan is also type two diabetic . He is not on medication. We are able to control it with diet at this time.

Thanks for your post. I think this is something I should give more thought to. I may also give him a protein supplement in a smoothly or add a protein drink. Good luck to you.

Hmmm...Hubby (cbd) has lost some weight but I thought it was a combo of decreased portion size (appetite) and less movement/calorie expenditure. Hadnt thought it might be a symptom. Now I wonder?

Will be interested to hear what your Neuro has to say Kevin...You've got a full plate for him lined up!!

Strangely enough my partner who has been in a nursing home for 15 months has gained 2 stone since going there, the meals are fantastic and every thing is cooked for him for a soft diet, I think they cream everything, I put it down to the lack of exercise he was a very active person until psp hit hard, now can only take a few steps when assisted by two careers, loves his food always has done so the six small meals a day that they give him keeps him interested throughout the day,

My husband went from 210 lbs to yesterday when We weighed him, he is at 157 lbs. And he is on a PEG tube. Maybe Kevin has something there when he mentioned in his post about nutrition absorption problem. Joyce from snowy Minnesota.

Sorry for late reply. Weight loss was one of the first symptomsof my husband’s CBD and this was in spite of his diet being the same as always. When he could still swallow he craved high calorie sweet food and would just eat loads of it - unlike him as he had always enjoyed savoury food. He didn’t put on weight though. Once he struggled to swallow his weight loss was dramatic.

Now he is PEG fed his weight is fairly stable.

I am with Kevin on this one. I think the disease disrupts both the appetite bit of the brain and the bit that is involved in glucose/ energy etc.

I mentioned it to our neurologist but I don’t think there is much research available to tell us what might be happening.

I hope your Mum is as well as she can be

Hi thank you for your input,I think there is something in all our experiences perhaps it’s something the PSP society could pass on to researchers. Mums eating everything in sight but we can see the weight falling off her weekly x x x

Hi Greens

We were talking to the neurologist last week.

Quite a bit of Liz's weight loss is muscle loss because she is so sedentary.

Just a thought.
