Nursing home/hospice??

Hi everyone. My dad has psp and has been living in private residential care for a year. (He sold his house and 2/3rds of the money has already gone on care home fees. ) we tried for chc but were offered fnc but only if he was in a nursing home.

He has deteriorated so much now these past few months (being fed, incontinent etc) the residential home can longer meet his needs (although the carers day they can its management)and he has to move to nursing. The problem being where we live in Nottinghamshire there isn't much choice for nursing homes and the ones we've seen I wouldn't be happy to leave him there for his final months. (Prob 6 if we are lucky)

Can he not go into a hospice? I'm really at a cross roads of what to do.

The Parkinson's nurse is fast tracking him for chc but that could go either way. The money isn't what I worry about it's about dad being happy n well looked after.

The Parkinson's nurse and district nurse av spoken to the home to say it's not in dad's best interests to move him but I feel it's more the fact that his money will run out soon and they are not prepared to accept social funding even though they've had tens of thousands of pounds from him.

I feel so sad and upset and don't know what to do for the best.

Hi NoddyP1

As part of the Fast Track the CHC will assess his needs. Those include a suitable place for him.

Fast Track is usually done in a few days, not a few weeks.

This might be helpful for you.

The CCG know all of the Nursing Homes in your area. When they do the assessment have a chat with them.

It is unusual for Hospices to take people for more than a couple of weeks or so. Having said that they are all different.

I suppose you have googled for Nursing Homes in your area?

Quite a few Nursing Homes around where we live are unsuitable because they have high numbers of disturbed, but physically active elderly dementia patients. Such places are distressing for the frail and weak.

Have you looked online for the CQC inspection report of the Nursing Home you find unsuitable?

I do hope this helps a little.

Thankyou Kevin . I started to look 6 months ago and visited many. There was only 1 I was happy with and it has since changed management and it definately wasn't the same.

I may now start looking further afield . Back to checking cqc reports. Sad as it's valuable time that could be spent with dad. X

Hi Noddyp1

We've been through that loop finding somewhere for respite. We got some nasty experiences with respite. Faulty heating with 30 deg C rooms where the windows wouldn't open was one.

When you get one sorted outgo through the care plan carefully. Everything should be on it including how often the person should have a carer put their head around the door to check their OK.

It sounds like you are on the ball.

Good luck.

X

Noddyp1 I am so very sorry. This is almost exactly what happened to my husband. The Care Home he was in was not looking after him properly as he deteriorated.

We got CHC but it only came through a few weeks before he died! The Nursing Homes here are rubbish too. I checked the ones we were allocated and 2 had really bad CQC reports. So I told them there was no way he was going to either of them. We did look at the other two however plus another one I liked the look of. They told me if I wanted him to go there I could pay for it myself! We choose one of the ones they suggested the other was not suitable for his needs.

What I didn't realise was he was entitled to go to the one we had found as they already had some CHC patients!! If that happens the CCG are obliged to send your loved one there! Even if they haven't got anyone currently! Anyway the one we picked told me 2 days later that we shouldn't have been shown the room as it had been promised to someone else a week ago! In my opinion the real reason was they didn't want the bother of a PSP patient!

So get looking for Nursing Homes and if you find one you like ask have they ever had CHC patients before! If they have, the CCG have to fund it regardless of how expensive it is! Look at the Nursing Homes on the CQC website too. Read the entire report as then you will know what they are really like.

Hugs to you. I know what you are going through.
