Mattress air pump tips.

Has anyone got any tips on how to quieten an air pump used with a pressure mattress. Mum had hospital  bed & Mattress delivered yesterday. It is going to be amazing for her but the noise of this pump is so loud. We have both been awake since 2.30 listening to this damn pump. She struggles enough with sleep as it is even with tablets. Nothing knocks her out now.  DN said to wrap a blanket around it yesterday when she set it up but thst made no difference at all.

My mother has one of those and it makes no noise at all think you sho u or ask for it to be changed. The only thing you can hear is the air changing the position of the mattress like a hissing noise . Would definitely try to get it changed as you need your rest

DN said yesterday if too  noisy have to change the mattress to normal one as i said when they set it up it was too noisy. They probably use the cheapest ones on market in this county!

Sorry don't know where you are we are in the UK. But like jzgirl the pump is under the bed and definitely not noisy at all. Could they not check another one for you?

We put it on floor and with blanket round as DN advised but made no difference whatsoever to noise.  Will ring today and ask for a different one to see.

You must never cover the air vents on the compresser because it sucks in air and releases it through those vents. Janexx

DN gave some great advice then with the blanket!

Sorry but get the pump changed, we did this.  I asked the social worker if the environmental officer could do a noise level reading, they changed it before he/she came.  I put the pump on a square of foam on the carpet under the bed.  This eased the noise and vibration.  Agree with jzygirl do not cover the pump as this can cause overheating of the pump and possible fire risk.

Best wishes Tim

Is it new? If yes, it shouldn't be that bad - I put mine on the side and that helped a bit - the air filter inside might be clogged and may need cleaning and repair but it shouldn't make noise

One more tip, in my dad's mattress, the air was pumped in through one end and that part would have very strong vibrations - so I made sure that part was on the feet side and it fell down and away from the bed as much as possible so that the vibrating part did not annoy him

I don't think it is new as bed isn't as can see wear and tear signs so think pump maybe a used one too.

I think a blanket might pose a  fire risk?? How about contacting the supplier? No real solution but how about buying some soft fabric ear defenders like you would get on an airplane? Good Luck

I've asked OT about it & she is going to get someone from the stores who deal with the aids stock to come and look at it.

Does a air mattress help make them more comfortable? My brother can only sleep on his back now, he can't turn on his side anymore, and slips out of bed when he try's to use the urnial, would a hospital bed be a better solution for him?

It sounds like it would be to me. As he can't move off his back his is at risk of pressure areas developing and potentially sores. The air mattress relives the pressure as gently ripples & moves position. We've only had it two days and it is amazing help for Mum and me.

Thanks for getting back to me, that is one problem I am worried about is pressure sores, he does'nt need that on top of everything else he  going threw.        Nettie

I wasn't aware you could get hospital beds at home until recently and was only after Mum been in hospital realised we needed an electric adjusting bed. I asked in here about it on here and everyone said don't buy one get one from OT or DN.  Mum has only recently been diagnosed with CBD after hospital admission but been ill with it for a number of years now without any specific diagnosis given until now. Learnt more off here in a few days than from the health professionals x

We have recently been given an air mattress it's so improved the sore bottom , it has a slight him but nothing that worries us. It hooks onto  the end of the beds ,

OT is asking someone from stores to come and check it out. I don't think it is new but did come wrapped up in mattress. Mum has managed to sleep better during night with it. I haven't! Driving me insane.

Hopefully they will change it.

This doesn't sound right at all.  We have an air mattress and the pump makes a slight hissing noise only.  I think yours must be faulty.  The actual mattress does take a bit of getting used to at first I think but it is certainly doing its job and D has no pressure sores (fingers crossed) at the moment.  Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks will have to chase the stores tomorrow as no one has contacted today. Mum likes the mattress itself.
