My Father is 64 yrs old and has PSP the past 7yrs and 4 weeks ago we brought him into the local A&E Beaumont Hospital - Dublin with a swollen stomach (rock hard to touch) The Doctors explained the he had Pneumonia & a blocked bowel. Four weeks have pasted now and he's still in hospital after having 4 Colonoscopy / Decompression procedures done. They have now told us that surgery in not an option due to his state of health and the stage he is at with PSP. They want to discharge him with no solution to the problem as they say there is nothing else the can do for him but send him home.
Has any ever heard of this problem with a solution from the Medics, as we can't give up on my Dad.
Please please please try to help me as Ireland seems to not have an answer.
Thanking you in advance

This is such a shame. I wonder what stage your dad is with his PSP? He is so young to not be treated but I am wondering how bad his health is? My mum is 82 yrs old and very frail, but still mobile. She is losing weight despite being fed, and sits with eyes closed for majority of time. In her case medical intervention would kill her!! Have you asked for a second opinion? My mum is under a neurologist in James Cook Hospital in Middlesborough UK who specialises in PSP so I contact him if anything I need to know.
Is there a PSP specialist near to you in Ireland? Or can you ask for a second opinion with another doctor? You would not want your dad to suffer unnecessarily but more importantly you do not want to give up on him if someone or some procedure can help him.
When my wife's bowels would get hard I'd put on a rubber glove and use my finger to go in and dislodge any large pieces. Not pleasant but we do what we can for our loved ones. Jimbo
I applied my mother a anal gel, I wore gloves, apply an enema and someone gave him a massage on his stomach in the sense of clockwise, using my finger to help her to evacuate. it was always done. Perhaps it is difficult for many people, but the face of my mother's relief, it was worth doing that and more. God bless you!
Hi there. When dad needed an op, he had it done using local. It was pretty hideous, but he got through it.. It was the waiting all day to have it done that caused more problems. It's very frustrating that those with PSP are unable to get shifted up the list! If you feel he needs to be helped then why not speak to PALS ? Perhaps they could use a spinal block rather than general? There must be other options? I feel your frustration. Sincerely hope you get it sorted.
Hi Suzanne, Is there not a PSP specialist in Beaumont. I attend St Vincents with my husband which is near to me. Perhaps you should try the Mater Hospital a specialist named Tim Lynch maybe able to help you. Good Luck. it is not easy
