Why does it cost so much to die?

My husband has always said he wanted an autopsy when he died as there are so many things wrong with him. Found out , just that by itself is $1800. Basic cremation is $1,000. My Head is still spinning. He has VA but they will only pay$300. Towards it.

Yoyo, The end is in some ways a relief but in other ways it is difficult. Just when death comes and you think you can take a breath you get hit with the cost of dying. Hang in there and work through this issue. You've made it through a lot so this should be a piece of cake. Jimbo

Dear Yoyo,

Its something that always amazes me too, giving it is inevitable for all - The standard here is $7000. Some advertise at four but there are extra's that go on...- I suppose business is business in life and in death. No wonder it bears the brunt of so many pub jokes!

I submitted my husband's body to science. They picked up his body and will create his body and return the ashes to me - no charge.

I have a feeling it is too late as hospice thinks today may be his last day. Thank you so much to everyone for their thoughtfulness and caring answers .

My husband finally succumbed To his disease early this morning. I am glad he is not suffering any longer although he never complained. I was so grateful for that. He passed peacefully at home. Thank you everyone for all your insite to caring for a person with a neurological disease. He is going to have an autopsy to see for sure what was wrong. The hospice lady said I was doing everything perfectly. Being on this forum had given me a heads up as to what to expect. I pray for everyone else who still have to continue on this horrible journey.
