Breastfeeding, skin on skin and contractions (c-section)

Hey everyone,

I gave birth about 10 days ago (emergency c section at 29+3 due to HELLP/Pre eclampsia/slowinf fetus heart) and I now have 2 kids in NICU. They encourage us to do skin on skin and after I started doing that, I have been having severe contractions even when I am very far from them; i am told that’s because of the oxytocin levels on my body.m rising as a result of the skin on skin. I have just got back home last night from the hospital where they will remain for another couple of months, and I am still trying to get breastfeeding properly in place, which means I am also pumping frequently. That’s supposed to also get oxytocin levels up. I am taking Spafson 3 times a day x2 tablets but I am seriously in pain and I donno what else to do or how long it will take for my body to understand the kids are no longer inside.

Help please!

That sounds like you're going through a lot, you've had major surgery and that's going to take time to recover from . After a cC- section you're not even meant to drive for 6 weeks, so it is a long recovery period. I hope it starts to improve for you soon and that your babies are doing well.

I found with breastfeeding, watching romantic and loving films or a feel good Christmas film good for Oxytocin production for getting milk flowing. Love not stress! Some people say listen to crying babies, not that just stressed me out and made expressing worse.

Good luck xx

I would go back to the doctor and demand some investigation into this. CT scan or something suitable to see inside and check if there is a reason for extreme pain - things do go wrong sometimes and it wouldn't be the first time the surgeon for example forgot a tool inside... Hopefully that's not the case and it's just your uterus shrinking but if you feel something is wrong, you need to take responsibility and speak out.

Wish you and your babies all the best and quick recovery.

Hi! Afterpains are normal, it's the uterus shrinking back to its pre baby size, and for some people they are quite painful even more painful than labour contractions, but it shouldn't be all the time and it should go away within a couple weeks. Look then up and talk to your doctor if it feels like more than that is going on! You've been through an awful lot. Congrats on baby ❤️
