C section or Vbac?

Hello!

This is my second pregnancy and im on my 32nd week. I had a scan Monday and was told that baby is measuring 3 weeks ahead and amniotic fluid is more than normal (870ml approx). My first baby 4 years ago was an Ecs as she was 1 week delayed and was measuring big. I am from SE Asia but moved to Glasgow where my husband is originally from. I really want to have a VBAC with this 2nd one or at least try to have a VBAC but the consultant at the Princess Royal rushed me into signing a waiver for a section at 39 weeks, which is next month. Please shed me some light on what to do. I don't was a section because my husband is new to his job and a temp and won't have paternity leave so it will be difficult for me to take care of my 4 year old daughter and do school runs, etc. Please share your experiences on having a successful VBAC with a big baby and also a nice experience with a section.

Thank you very much!

Hi Cathy, I thought is was the law for paternity leave to be given. Some company’s say the two weeks can’t be separated etc but should get paternity.

You have to have been working for the company for periods of time to get paid paternity leave and if you're agency you probably won't qualify for paternity leave. When I worked for an agency while I was pregnant as I have been with them long enough I didn't get paid time off for my midwife appointments like you get work an employed job and had to get maternity allowance and not SMP

I know what you mean you get the leave though but depends on job, agency, contract if you would be paid or not etc 👍🏻

Not really, even if your fully employed by a company you have to qualify for paternity leave and for paternity pay, it really sucks if you start a new job while pregnant, because you and partner can miss out on quite a bit. I missed out on being able to claim SMP even though if been made redundant and had to find another job and then I found out I was pregnant after I started. You basically have to be working for a company before you find out your pregnant or you can miss out.

Paternity Leave

You must:

be an employee

give the correct notice

have been continuously employed by your employer for at least 26 weeks up to any day in the ‘qualifying week’

The ‘qualifying week’ is the 15th week before the baby is due. This is different if you adopt.

Paternity Pay

You must:

be employed by your employer up to the date of birth

earn at least £120 a week (before tax)

give the correct notice

have been continuously employed by your employer for at least 26 weeks up to any day in the ‘qualifying week’

The ‘qualifying week’ is the 15th week before the baby is due. This is different if you adopt.

Say you qualify for the two weeks leave. Can you hand your notice in afterwards? My husband qualifies been there years just timing has offer of new job so was gonna leave after baby arrival. But we didn’t know how that would work? Do you know if we have to pay back or not?

Yes he'll qualify even if he hands his notice in after his first day back after his leave, you may want to check his companies policy on Paternity pay, some places are good and give full pay and some will only offer the statutory amount. He won't need to pay back any statutory paternity leave, but if they pay extra, it might be worth checking his employment contract about paternity because if they pay his full salary and then he leaves they may want some of that back. I know that some places with maternity packages do that, if you don't return
