Sickness post 20 weeks

Hi there,

I just wondered if anyone had a similar experience to me and could help me out. I'm 20 weeks pregnant today and I've had one hell of a time with sickness since week 7. I don't have HG - i'm apparently just a very pukey person. I was told it would subside by 20 weeks... then it was *probably* subside by 20 weeks. Here I am at 20 weeks with no sign of it stopping. I know it can just stop like a switch but I have a feeling it wont.

I just wondered if anyone experienced sickness past 20 weeks and did you ever get down to the cause/what it was? I've read online that it could be a GI issue related to pregnancy but god knows.

TIA!

I had all day intense nausea (but not sickness) to about 24 or so weeks before it started to subside. I’m a very non-pukey person so did not vomit at all, just felt horrid all day and night! No known cause but did not have it investigated. If you haven’t already talk to your GP as they may want to check you’re not anaemic and may prescribe something for vomiting. Sorry you feel so crap, it sucks when it shows no sign of letting up! Xx

Aleady had it checked! I'm at the hospital for all my midwife appts due to a range of health issues so i think i'll wait to see if it lasts till next week and then give them a call..

Thank you for the help though! x

Yep, I had it constantly from very early right through to about 20 weeks, then it let up a bit and came back... But when it came back it was a bit more 'normal', like first thing in the morning, came and went etc, whereas before it was just there all the time. I was told it would peak around 9/10 weeks and go by 12 weeks so it has been a bit of a slog, but then a lot of women I spoke to said they had it right through or not at all, so I just put myself somewhere on that spectrum. I got terrible acid reflux around 22 weeks and that made me actually sick, but otherwise it was mainly nausea. I got omeprazole for that and it went within about five minutes so worth trying if that's a factor. Nothing (no matter how much ginger!) really worked on the general nausea. But somewhere around 24-26 weeks it seemed to really ease again and fingers crossed it's now just occasional. I was told if you're sensitive to hormonal changes and in particular oestrogen (so felt ill on the pill etc) that you are more likely to feel ill when pregnant, but who knows. It may be worth checking with your GP to make sure you're hydrated enough and if there's anything the can prescribe x

Thanks for your respone! Yeah I've already been told early on in this pregnancy you'd probably find if i'd been checked i'd have a hormone imbalance so could be that. I'm sick heavily until about 2-3ish then it gets a bit lighter... But as soon as I eat dinner that pesky acid reflux gets me!

p.s ginger helping in any capacity has been an absolute myth for me! No help atall

😂

Sorry to hear that. Maybe try the omeprazole as it made such a massive difference immediately, and lots of women have it for pregnancy related gastro issues. I also found certain things like tea (my favourite!) made me worse for a while, along with other things, but it was always there lurking even when I cut stuff out... I became obsessed with twiglets which for some reason I could have bucket loads of - very useful when they actually sell them in buckets at Christmas :)

I’m 34 weeks and still suffering with sickness. Between 6 and 18weeks it was extreme, all day, everyday nausea and vomiting.

Then it seemed to calm down for maybe 6-8weeks and it’s been very much present again for the last 8weeks.

But it’s slightly different this time. I don’t feel as nauseous all the time. But I’ll just get random bouts of vomiting.

I did work out what triggered me though, I worked out if I have large volumes of milk I’m sick, garlic in any quantity I’m sick and if I eat greasy chips I’m sick! So that helps me to avoid those. I also take regular gaviscon now with meals and at bedtime and that really helps. I didn’t even realise I had acid sometimes so could have avoided that had I known earlier on.

Having little plain snacks that are easy to grab helps me too. Pasta cooked and ready to eat, carrot sticks, fruit, raisins, dunkers, crackers etc. Rather than waiting for 3 bigger meals as I struggle if I get overly hungry or if I then eat too much at once, it then triggers sickness. So I’m a grazer now.

Good luck x

Ahh I see, I hadn't thought about food triggers but because i've been so sick i've not really eaten alot of food that isn't plain anyway... and I tend to vomit soon after regardless. I've always been a grazer anyway! God knows. Think i'll have to admit defeat and speak to the MW/GP

Awful isn’t it. I thought I was having plain stuff too but then suddenly quavers were making me sick and I realised they had garlic in.

Hopefully they’ll have answers for you and can help. Mine just keep telling me it’s normal. They did prescribe anti sickness medication but they made me feel worse but everyone is different.

Ice poles are a good one for something sweet and to keep you hydrated x
