Hyperemesis Gravidarum at 34 weeks

Hi all,

I am almost 34 weeks pregnant. I have suffered immensely in this pregnancy. It's a very much wanted rainbow baby after many years of loss and infertility. I was diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum in the first trimester. I lost 15% of my body weight, had severe anaemia and inability to keep any fluids down. At my worst I was throwing up over 40 times a day. I've had a torn oesophagus, a hiatus hernia and damaged uvula in the throat due to the severity of the sickness. I've pretty much lived in hospital on IV fluids, at least twice a month.

I finally had some reprieve after starting on a different medication regime. I had 4 weeks of being able to manage. Only being sick maybe 5 or so times a day.

Now it's come back I am at a loss. The doctors say its so rare to continue this late and they have offered steroids. I've done a lot of research and I know they are safe.

I guess I am just wondering if anyone else has had gotten to 34 weeks and had a relapse to HG? I swear if one more person calls it morning sickness I might lose it. I would just kill for normal morning sickness. I am currently sat here with a nose bleed from being sick so forcefully, bleeding gums and a migraine so severe triggered from already being sick 6 times since 6 am...

If you've had HG I would love to hear your experiences.

I’m so so sorry you have this. I was the same as you only that I Was more fortunate and got some relief at 28weeks. I was anticipating it to return right at the end as o heard this can happen but fortunately for me it did not.

I found when my hormones changed at different points of pregnancy, it affected which Medication works best. It is nothing like morning sickness and I can only describe it as living hell on earth which makes you feel so guilty when you have been trying so long (We had infertility and IVF) and it’s all you wanted but having HG is nothing short of living torture. I think odansetron was the best towards the end for me but I didn’t need steroids so can’t comment I’m afraid.

Really feel for you and hope things improve for you. The good news is all my taste buds and ability to drink water and eat properly pretty much returned within an hour after birth. I had my first cup of tea without throwing up and it was amazing. I know it feels like it’s going on for an eternity but Hang in there it won’t be long xx

Oh I'm so sorry you understand but it also helps me to hear your experience.

I have felt the same. This pregnancy took four years and 3 losses and I have been so unwell and miserable and guilty for feeling this way all at the same time.

I am on the highest dose of ondasetran wafers. I think you may be right, the hormone changes to seem to mark an increase. For me I notice when my mood is very unstable and teary my sickness also ramps up.

I've been so unwell they have offered to induce me at 37 weeks. I haven't decided yet if I will as that also brings guilt for me.

Thanks for your support and letting me know how it resolved ❤️

I had HG during both of my pregnancies so I feel for you so much. It really sounds like you’ve been through such a horrible time with your pregnancy. Mine definitely started to worsen again towards the end of my first pregnancy (although I did end up in hospital with sickness with second baby the day after my due date but gave birth 2 days later so was possibly was related to that!)

I was induced at 38 weeks with my first as she had stopped growing and I’ve always wondered if HG was the reason why.

I really really hope you have some relief soon. xx

Thank you. It really is horrific. I ended up in the maternity unit yesterday on iv fluids and iv meds. They said sometimes as the placenta gears up for delivery the hormones wreak havoc for hg. They have said I can take one extra ondasetran a day which brings me to the max limit but I hope it helps. I am hoping to avoid the steroids as I'm so very close to the date of induction offered. But 3 weeks in HG life feels like 3 months of normal life. Thanks for your support. I can't believe how little is really know about this condition

I came across your post and felt the desire to create an account just so I could reply. I had the same thing as you. Thank you for sharing your story. I’m so so deeply sorry your pregnancy was taken from you and you never had the chance to experience pregnancy the way it should be experienced. I hope someday to meet another woman who has shared this experience and just cry about it together…I feel it would be a cathartic experience. All the people who don’t understand make it feel all the more isolating.
