Any experience with Low lying Placenta problems? Or Vasa praveia?

Hi Guys

It’s my first time posting over here as I had grown so attached to the fertility network but now I don’t think the following is appropriate for over there.

I am now 33+4 weeks pregnant from our 2nd IVF ICSI cycle after MCing our first.

Pregnancy has gone relatively smooth other than being diagnosed with Gestational diabetes.

At my 20week scan I was told I had a low lying placenta which should move as pregnancy progresses.

28 week scan still no progress with placenta but baby was growing fine.... estimated weight 2.9oz

At my 32 week scan last week (1st time going alone due to pandemic) this was such a terrifying experience. (Estimated weight 3.14oz)

I was being scanned as normal... and after a long silence the sonographer began asking loads of questions... she the asked to do a internal scan.. more silence.

Cutting a long story short she left the room for what felt like forever and returned with two people a placenta specialist and a consultant.

I was told my baby’s abdominal area has stopped growing, my placenta is still low lying a only moved 3mm in 4weeks and there are loose blood vessels which should basically be embedded in my placenta.

They want to see me in two weeks to decide on a plan/date of delivery... which will now almost certainly be a csection.

It’s taken me a few days to do some reading on the above and to my horror the statistics are extremely worrying... it’s a very rare condition, 1 in 5000 women experience this and 6 out of 10 babies die...😳

On hindsight I now wish I didn’t do any research as I am now so worried about my baby.

I have spoken with the doctor who has tried to assure me things will be fine as those numbers are from the people who go into natural labour which causes placenta/blood vessels to rupture which is dangerous for baby... But they do plan on removing mine earlier (36-37wks) the decision will be based on my next scan.

As if we don’t have enough to worry or be anxious about right now.... I’m so near to tears these days with a lump in my throat.😭😭😭

Thanks for taking the time to read such a long post, but I guess my real question is..... Has anyone experienced anything similar? Anyone with placenta issues?

As soon as I begin to try and forget about my difficulties getting here, then comes a reminder and my infertility nightmare continues as I’m told my recent issues are mainly found in women who have received fertility treatment like IVF 😭😢

I don’t have any answers as my placenta was high ( so didn’t feel much movements) I felt worried sick throughout my whole pregnancy until my daughter arrived. I felt it was too good to be true after a long 7 year struggle. I guarantee if it wasn’t that you were worried over it would be something else - it seems impossible to just “enjoy” pregnancy after a struggle with infertility. I naively thought once I was pregnant the nightmare would be over 😟I’m sure the medics are keeping a close eye on you. If you notice a change in movement then you must phone maternity department & they will scan you. It must be especially difficult being pregnant with COVID19. I hope other ladies can offer stories of reassurance. Wishing you the best the rest of your pregnancy xxx

Oh hon, I don't have any answers about the conditions but I'm sending you big, big hugs. You must be so worried. Hopefully the information you've found is based on worst case scenarios and in your case it won't necessarily be so serious. I hope things have taken a more positive turn on your next scan. Sending up a little prayer for you and your baby xxx

Hi,

I had a low lying placenta before the 20th week but it went up with the progress of the pregnancy so I can not really give you the best advise. Also IVF pregnancy but with twins.

When I was 30 weeks I went to an appointment and I had to be admitted to the hospital (signs of early labour although I was feeling fine).

My boys are almost 3 months 😍😍

Like you the “road” to get here was not easy and I was anxious during all the way.

My advice is try to relax and trust your medical team, they know what they’re doing! 😉

Hi mushy, nice to see you on this site too x as you know I had IVF . I had a low lying placenta that was anterior (on front) found at the 20 week scan and like Lucy, luckily mine moved up as the pregnancy progressed. They give you the worse case scenario, as they have to and it ends up frightening you so much. I remember being scared to do everything.

It’s easier said than done but try not to worry too much, they are keeping a close eye on you. Take it easy though!

At every growth scan my baby’s weight was up and down and at my 38 week scan they said she hadn’t grown for 3 weeks and was going to be very small so wanted me in the next day to be induced- she came out at 6.11! The consultant said sometimes the scans can be inaccurate as it can be difficult to measure the babies due to their position/placenta. I’m not saying your scan was inaccurate, just telling you what happened with me x

Take care and keep us posted. I’m sure everything will b ok and your in good hands xx

I had a low lying placenta which didn’t move up but I ended up having a c section at 33 weeks as my baby had stopped growing due the placenta not doing everything it should be. I understand your worry as I was kept in from 31 weeks for various reasons but they will only suggest what is safe for both you and baby. I googled all sorts and worried myself! See if you can ring a cosultant or your midwife if you’re still worried and talk it through xx

My placenta was low, picked up at 20 weeks, I had scans to check if it had moved - it hadn’t, C section planned etc. Scanned at 37 weeks, it had moved and I had a natural birth. Fingers crossed for you x
