I average about 6km a day - perhaps more in the Summer.When I was fit, I cycled 15,000 miles a year, and in 1995, I cycled 760 miles (1,200km) in 87 hours.

...but I am 71 - and I was disabled for 5 years.

For "normal" people, who have to arrange their day round work and family, 10,000 steps a day would be difficult.

Some people could get their exercise by walking or cycling (part of) their commute to work... and if you are not commuting due to the CoViD, This gives you time to exercise.

I retired - so I can arrange my day round exercise - and choose an hour or so when it is not raining. When the pubs and cafes open - I could walk to the next village for lunch!

I exercise 5 times per week that's not including walks, I've always known the 10000 steps per day to be wrong.

I'm a qualified fitness instructor and used to be seriously fit, arthritis now makes it harder to do but more important than ever.

You are right, it would be difficult to fit 10000 steps in with work etc.

I have a car but I do cycle or walk a lot, car is for longer journeys.

Thanks for your reply, it was very interesting.

It can become an obsession Jimtom. My son-in-law is one of those with OCD tendencies and he gets very fretful when he can't complete his steps. Of course you could exercise to the same effect in many other ways more quickly if you engage in something more energetic and aerobic. I think that the original intent was always to encourage people to move more throughout the day, but for anyone struggling to achieve that many steps, I'd say "do what you can", or mix up your steps with an alternate form of exercise.

The original intent was to get people to buy the pedometer that was being advertised at the time.

Even though I walk a lot Sue I agree with you. I have the Joe Wicks HiiT DVD and 15 minutes of tough exercise can count for an hour in the gym.

That's interesting fitness instructor that explains your healthy eating 😋Shaim about arthritis is it osteo or rheumatoid have a nice day 😊

in reply to

Osteo

Very interesting. I tend to walk, cycle or jog 5 or 6 days a week and average steps would be approximately 15,000 each day. I walked/jogged just under 15,000 today and that's a very short route for me. I feel so much better when I do 20,000 or more.

I'm fortunate in that I'm not working at present due to the school exams being on hold. I've been into exercise for many years and when I worked full time I cycled to work, around 7 miles each way and I would sometimes walk there and back.

I also keep fit to try and keep my joints moving. I'm 61 and want to keep as fit as I can for as long as I can.

Thank you for sharing.

Do you think that the fitter you become the more you have to do to keep at a good level?

in reply to

Yes I do. If I don't work my upper body, which I'm shocking at doing, particularly with the gyms closed, then my arms become quite weak.

in reply to

What do you do for your upper body?

in reply to

I use dumbells and try press ups, I've a way to go with the press ups but will get there

in reply to

Yes if you keep at it you will get there. 👍

in reply to

Oh yes, I certainly will. Looking at the forecast for next week I'm pretty sure I'm going to be doing the Joe Wicks Lean in 15 DVD 👍👍
