It’s night and the day is done so I have a few spare minutes.
We have been assisting in the fire house today, covering the phones, answering questions, handling the radios, making and delivering food.
Providing showers at our house for displaced fire fighters that can’t get home for the night. They sleep in the fire house since they don’t want to bother us. We are a short distance away.
As well as supplying the bulldozers with fuel and supplies.
Tomorrow will be more of the same.
The nice fire break to the south of us is looking pretty good. A bit more to go and maybe it will hold. The wind is supposed to turn from the south towards us so we hope the break does hold.
On the positive side we received air support today from the world’s largest retardant bomber. A 747 that can drop 20,000 gallons in one shot. As well as a number of smaller planes.
The fires have closed all access to the south and inland. We can only go north and there isn’t much there. There is a potential for another round of lightning Sunday and Monday.
All that said this is only one small area that is becoming a little more secure. Close by there are major fires and evacuations (hundreds of thousands of people), and all over the state as huge fires spread out.
We are not even into our true fire season yet when the winds blow offshore.
We received 11,000 lightning strikes in 24 hours.
Maybe next we can have an earthquake for something different. Just to shake things up of course.

I am following it on the UK news, it is so horrendous. So many people being evacuated. The firefighters must be very grateful for the chance to grab a shower at your home. I hope it will be over soon for your community. You are all working very hard and doing an outstanding job. 👍👍
You must all be exhausted - I really feel for you and the fire fighters and pilots, what an outstanding job you're all doing. Hoping you all stay safe and protected- the animals too. 🙏 x
All I can really say Dave is keep going and doing the much needed hard physical work you’re all doing and we’ll do the praying and hoping from here..... sorry I don’t think sending a bake/pie from the UK for sustenance will work 🙃
Oh. One of the meat pies. Those are the best! Just the thought is good and can keep a person going.
Thanks.
Thank you for the update on your perilous situation daveh121. It's good to hear what's happening as I'm sure many of us are holding you all in our thoughts. It must be quite a sight to see the efforts of the various aircraft fighting the fires from above.
You are clearly doing your bit for the whole operation too and I'm sure that all your efforts are being well appreciated.
Once again sending heartfelt best wishes and hoping that indeed the break will hold and you'll be safe! 🙏
It's awful what's happening and I have looked at the photos. I really hope that the wind changing doesn't wreak havoc on where you are and I hope the fire break holds up for you.
I didn’t think of a monsoon. That would be so much better! Great idea and thanks to the thoughts.
So you got the VLAT! I read that all the call when needed resources have been called out by CalFire. (Fire nerd here; I did some fire info, Twin did Type I team dispatch, brother does fire prevention, firefighting and ICS training). Stay safe.
I'm so sorry to hear that Wallowa. That is so sad and is something you never really get over. She may be gone but she'll always be with you. Take care. xx
You must miss her very much. I had three sisters and two brothers but I now have one sister and one brother. It was different for them because they were all in their eighties and although it's very sad, they had a good long life. It doesn't make it any easier but it is more understandable. Keep safe. xx
It is a horrendous situation period. My manager who rents out his home in CA lost it today. A coworker of ours that lived just a few miles away managed to get out in time and place his bed ridden mother in assisted living. The fire fighters are doing their best, with the best equipment, but this fire is a true monster. My prayers go out to all that have been impacted.
It is very impressive regarding the involvement of your family to fight the challenge. Having worked for Scott Safety a few years ago, I hope the efforts of our design team are doing a great job to protect the front line. God Bless.
