Our new porch buddy: a blue tailed skink.

They are native to Christmas Island. Not sure how they wound up in the Sierra Foothills. I have seen two during the past week. None for the past 30 years.

Just nice to have around. Cute little things. They like to eat ants which is a good thing.

We have a lot of skinks in our area. They are all over the lawn and especially my deck. My cat likes to watch them. They are very fast.

The dog was having fun watching the skink also.

I've never seen one before, that's an impressive tail, what a lovely color. 😊

Yes, a fantastic color. Hard to mistake.

He's so cute! xx

Hi daveh121, Very cute indeed, and not only absolutely harmless themselves, useful for helping to get rid of ants too, so a pleasure to see around. I wonder what's suddenly brought them to your door?

I was wondering the same thing.

What a strange creature and well camouflaged except for the tail. I read that it's the juveniles that have blue tails, which disappear as they get older. Fascinating to look at and there are two species to California. Very interesting dave, thanks for sharing.

Does "Sierra" mean something like "hot dry plain"?

Do you only find them in arid areas?

From the dictionary: a range of mountains especially with a serrated or irregular outline.

I am not sure about the distribution of the skinks.

Supposedly the only go to about 3”. The one I saw earlier was about 4”.

Those blue tails are hard to miss.

What a rare sight that is for you to have seen 2 in the past week but having not seen any in the past 30 years, what a find.

Yes. Pretty nice.

Good bike riding lately. I have been taking advantage of it by riding everyday. Today was supposed to be short but since I hadn’t done it before it took 2.5 hours. It felt good.

Tomorrow will be another nice one.

I figure winter will be here soon so I better get my miles in while I can.

in reply to daveh121

It's good to spot wildlife that is rare, what a find.

That's fantastic news and I'm glad you've been riding it everyday. I bet that felt very good, it certainly makes me feel good.

Hope you enjoy your bike ride which will now be today. I didn't do any exercise yesterday as I was busy in the kitchen in the morning and had some research to carry out in the internet and to update my food diary as well electronically. I'm hoping to get out for a walk this afternoon, the weather is horrible here at the moment, thick fog and very wet.

Oh yes, Winter will be here before we know it and it's the time of year I don't like as I don't like the short days, bring me Spring/Summer and early Autumn any time. I've joined a gym and it's opening week after next so I'm looking forward to starting at the gym, my youngest daughter has joined as well. This'll do me when I can't get out as much.

I agree with everything you just wrote.

We are on the coast again where it is cooler, I do enjoy riding in warm weather.

I love the good weather but also like a good storm as long as I can still work out. We have a spin bike which is deadly boring but provides exercise and a weight set which helps out.

Good for the gym. A little social and a nice work out.

Hope all is well.

Thank you and I love the warm weather, suits me every time.

It is boring but it keeps you fit and that's good, keeping fit makes you feel so good.

Yes I'm looking forward to going there with my youngest daughter.

Enjoy your walks and bike rides.😊👍🌈

Thanks. You also.

Today’s ride was very soggy and cold due to the fog. I went since I just needed the exercise which I am happy about.

The weather is supposed to get warmer so I am looking forward to a nice ride this weekend.

in reply to daveh121

I'm sorry your ride was soggy and cold, funny thing it's foggy here now where it was boiling hot and sunny earlier. Even if the weather is off I do think it makes you feel good once you've done the exercise.

I'm glad your forecast is good for the weekend, ours is going the other way where it's getting cooler and damp, it's been very up and down since June.

Hello Dave

Very interesting, nature is amazing. The tail has me confused, instead of camouflage, almost an invitation to be seen.

Has this little chap only three legs or is the fourth tucked under its body?

I hope that all your vegetables are doing well, it must be almost a full time job now harvesting.

Last but not least, how is Old Ike? Doing well I hope! Does he mind sharing his porch with a skink?

Have a good day, Tim

Good Morning, I think. Old Ike will be 13 in August. He is a bit gimpy due to surgery on his knee but can still enjoy a 2 mile walk.

The skink does have one leg folded under. I didn’t notice it. Yes, the bright color doesn’t seem to be helpful to me either.

We have been working on preserving our harvest for the winter. Less trips to town for us. Town is a three hour round trip.

Hope you enjoy your day.
