Running youngsters

I suppose the assumption that the young have is that if you are out, you are not at risk! Yesterday afternoon went for a lovely walk in our local park and stopped to sit down on a bench to watch two beautiful swans and their four cygnets that were taking a break from the water. Everyone who passed us was keeping a safe distance. Then - a football team of youngsters came running down the path puffing and blowing. Most stayed on the path but some of them came off the path within touching distance to where we were sitting - no social distance at all. My partner said it was unlikely any of them would have the virus as they looked so young and healthy. I told him that wasn't the point. I should have thought to stick my walking stick out but wasn't expecting such crass behaviour around two clearly elderly people. Next time I'll be prepared. I just guess that being in the open air and the short time we were exposed to their breath would keep us safe. I hope so.

They will never learn.

You're right , just because they are young and healthy doesn't mean social distancing doesn't matter. I am a runner and I always social distance. Even if that means going on the road to get around.

This virus hasn't gone away. Just yesterday there has been an outbreak in an office building and 9 have tested positive so far.

Take care 😊

I wouldn't mind but some of them came off the path deliberately - ostensibly to not be too close to the swans, who were in any case chilled! I believe they were being supervised in general.

I would agree that in your situation that you describe that this group of people were thoughtless to your need or risk but should we say that it's "the young" and tar an entire generation with one brush?

I have seen many young people strictly adhereing to social distancing and going out of their way to help in the community that I live in.

I have read many posts and replies about "the youth," or "the young." Let's not write them off.

I have seen plenty of my elders break the social distancing rules but if I were to complain I could be accused of agism.

So while I agree that some people are inconsiderate as in the situation that you describe. Let's remember that one group of people do not represent an entire generation.

Hi happytulip, Absolutely. It wasn't me that said "Young people!" Most of them were running along the path, presumably as they had been told but some of them, when they reached the bench we were sitting on, left the path and ran close to us. We saw them all later in a different part, doing some other activities. It was our first time out in a park and we certainly weren't expecting to meet up with this, when running on narrow paths has been outlawed because of the panting. And yes - I wrote last week about the man, who hadn't been shielding, who pushed his way into my house without invitation, merely to give a lift to my partner. So no I'm not saying it's all young people or all old people. It's just some people who should either know better or be warned by whoever is supervising them not to do it. Either way, they're only thinking of themselves.

Social distancing apart please don't forget that swans can be vicious if you go too near their young and a male swan could break your arm. I am very wary of going near swans and cygnets and quite often advise parents not to let their children go too close.

Yes. I hadn't forgotten but we had sat watching those swans for some time as they groomed themselves a few feet from the path, and while several people walked past and some took photos. It's a small park used all the time by walkers, and the whole family were so chilled out and totally unfazed when the kids ran past them. So it was clear that they were not going to suddenly attack anyone. They are so used to people. There were single runners in the park who were automatically distancing. These kids should have kept to the path whether they were running or not, but they must have been told by an adult to run together and not advised to worry about breathing over elderly people who can't get out of their way.
