Sleepless nights - Anxiety

Hi everyone,

This is just a thought or observation for anyone who may be suffering with anxiety especially at night.

Last night I had a dream it wasn’t particularly funny but slightly. When I woke up I was laughing hysterically at the dream. It seemed totally hilarious. Phil was asking if I was okay but I was laughing so much at the dream I couldn’t speak. Every time I went to tell Phil what the dream was about I was in hysterics again and couldn’t speak.

Anyway my point is this.....I’m sure many of us can relate to the above scenario? ( unless I really am living in a total mad house) that things get out of proportion at night whether slightly funny or slightly worrying if you wake up with something that’s causing great concern remember the above scenario and try and relax and tell yourself that this really won’t seem anywhere near as bad in the morning.

Ali

Having lived with anxiety and depression for years I can testify that what you say is true. Things are always worse at night but it passes if you just wait it out.

I don't suffer with anxiety but in my late teens early twenties I did suffer panic attacks. They lasted a couple of years I remember. I once had a dream that I tapped danced all night, bare in mind I have never done this and can't dance but, I danced the whole night away, shoes clicking and clacking. I woke up and could hardly walk, my legs where so stiff and painful, they must have actually been moving all night to the beat of the music in my sleep. The aching muscles lasted a good few days. 💃

That’s very interesting I love finding out about dreams. To dream of dancing means you feel overwhelmed. Were you doing exams at that time Or started a new job by any chance?

I could of been I guess. I have always had lots of dreams and nightmares, always. I had a good loving upbringing so no triggers for nightmare I have just always had them. They don't bother me now of course. I only found out about 8 years ago that sleep paralysis was not a normal part of sleep. I thought, everyone experienced this. I can smell in dreams and also feel pain.😊🌸

Really. That’s so interesting. I’ve never heard of that before!

That’s because it really wasn’t. I pulled myself together to tell my mum as it featured my mum and dad and even my mum was underwhelmed so I won’t put you through it! . Oh dear I’m off again! 🤣🤣 I still think it’s funny but I know it’s not really!

Between you and me I do have a laughing problem and the more the tension and pressure not to laugh in a situation I’m likely to. I seem to have passed it on to my son unfortunately! But I think you’ve hit the nail on the head it’s to do with tension and pressure now you’ve mentioned it.

Dreams are fascinating. My neighbours were both in mental health and they say dreams are really important to uncover what’s really going on in your mind.

I hope you’re not still worried at night. Poor you. I think it must be so much harder when you live alone as it’s easier when you can share your thoughts especially in the middle of the night when things can seem overbearing.

Hi Ali

Isn't it strange how dreams can affect us and I'm glad yours was funny, I bet Phil wondered what was going on😂.

I agree though, things are always better in the morning and if you've had a bad dream when you walked up you can consciously start thinking about positives. I had very bad Emetophobia, fear of being sick, and it was always worse at night. I worked through a programme and had CBT and am a lot better now.

Very good post.

I don't think I have ever had a dream that has made me laugh. I have had lovely dreams when I have been disappointed that they aren't real. Just lately, not surprisingly, I have had quite a few covid related nightmares. x

You've never had a dream that makes you laugh!

Lots of people seem to be have horrible vivid nightmares. I read an article at the beginning of the lockdown and they said people will be having vivid dreams and nightmares. I suppose like you say it's to be expected when we are bombarded with bad news.

I hope you have a good day 🙂

I probably have but just can't remember them. The ones that stick in my head are the scary ones. You have a good day too. Thanks x

I was on meds for anxiety at night-but now put Lavender Oil on my pillow( top and bottom it seems to help a lot!

That's a good idea. I bought a natural organic lavender spray for my son to help him sleep and it worked well.

Anxiety is horrible so I hope you are finding ways of coping with it 💚

Oh Jerry. That must have been very troubling. What an awful thought to have and I’m glad it’s passed. We would soon notice something was wrong if we couldn’t get hold of you on here. There must have been so many people who felt the same as you. Awful.

In the beginning I had a bit of a problem as I’d washed my hands to oblivion. When lock down started we had just had our bathroom ripped out and had no bath or shower etc. We had no choice but to keep the builders coming as it was a health hazard not to. They came back and did the essential work but I was paranoid of catching it off them and that’s why I kept washing my hands.

The R rate is very low now so let’s hope that continues.

Dreams definitely reflect what’s going on in our waking life. It’s very fascinating.

i dread the night as i often have the most disturbing of dreams.

Do you. I wonder why? Do you know what is causing it. Certain foods Or medications can give us vivid frightening dreams. Also the Covid situation isn’t helping with this either.

i have always suffered anxiety and depression and i think it all stems from childhood, and night times i loath, the dark really bothers me.

Oh no that's a shame. I had GAD 15 years ago after taking anti malaria drugs and I couldnt deal with the dark so I understand 💚

Hello Agoodenough

I think that is great to wake up laughing at a dream. I don't recall ever laughing at a dream, what few I even remember were a little dark. Blessings.

I thought everyone woke up laughing at dreams at some time. It appears not lol 😁

When I was working I did some really big commercial heating systems and fault finding boilers gas and oil. I often dream I am working and often feel stressed out with the job in my dream. In the morning I'm really glad to wake up as the 'job' is obviously done and dusted. The after effect is the feeling of still being anxious but for nothing really.

I don't smoke or drink so I think I need a tablet to calm me down . Humans are very very complex but there is an array of tablets these days and some of them rectify what may be a lack of a certain chemical in a certain human situation. A good GP is needed in such circumstances. No good suffering in silence.
