Where to start!

Hi all

I’m new to this site. But not new to trying to lose weight. Done WW SW Rosemary Conley Noom fad stuff. And still here trying!

Life as we all know has been weird. My husband has cancer, we have been through a roller coaster in the last 2 years. And still on it although in remission at the moment so fingers crossed. My focus has been on him, and I still need to feed him well high calories to keep him well.

Not easy to count calories when doing this!! But must do something out on 2 stone though all this and was probably 2 stone too heavy at the start!

So let’s give it a go!

Hi Twinkle20, You are in pretty good company, I'm sure. I'm like you and have battled excess weight almost my whole life. I don't now, but I have empathy with anyone who still is, or wants to. It's hard to bring something new to the table when you've tried each new thing as it arrives. At the end of the day, whichever way we choose to do it, the sad truth is that we have to take in fewer calories than we are burning, and that usually does mean a bit of that old enemy .... hunger.

But best of luck this time around. I always found it was mind over matter. Sometimes mind won, and sometimes the fridge did! 🙄🙏😊

Thanks. I have to do this for my own health can’t look after hubby if I’m struggling with my own health.

So here goes! Do you use a calorie counting app?

Have you joined the Eating Healthy site on here. People are very supportive. I'm on meds and theyve caused weight gain ..on boobs too!! I am 3 stone overweight and from Saturday have started to cut out all the biscuits rice puddings trifles ice cream chocolate etc . I find it soooo hard as I've such a sweet tooth but I cant just have one....I have to eat the whole packet or the 4 Magnum ice creams one after the other my medication too has given me the munchies. All I think about is oh I'm hungry what can I eat now. I live on my own and dont do exercise . I just sit. I find it hard to do anything and housework I force myself. I've never really had hobbies. Yes the alcohol will add weight. Good luck with it. Theyve all told me to cut out completely all sugar and carbs and eat a high protein fat food. I know a lady who never touches carbs etc and she lost weight .

During lockdown I have def been drinking more!! Feel your pain!!!

in reply toTwinkle20

You can even drink gin and slimline tonic with pork scratchings! 👍🙄

Come over to the LCHF forum. You will be made very welcome. Wether you go in at the deep end with Keto or just start by cutting out bread, potatoes, rice, cakes, cereals, biscuits etc

I’ve lost 1.5 stone even though I have to feed my husband. He’s 6’6” and 76 kgs wet! Eats like a horse.

Hi Hylda

I’m going to give it a try and I have spent half my life calorie counting and need to try something else!

Going to cut out obvious carbs at first as I eat a fair amount of veg and some fruit anyway.

See what that does!!!

Watch this space!

I started the low carb high fat route a couple of weeks ago and sadly have already slipped up.

My big problem is that I don't like most hot foods, I do like bread.!

New potatoes straight from the garden another big like.

I lost 20kg last year but found it this year.

I can't eat eggs so lots of meal suggestions are no good for me.

Hope you have good luck with your new eating plan.

What works for most people is a combination of Low-Carbohydrate, High-Fat (LCHF) and Intermittent Fasting (IF). I lost five and a half stone - and I am slim two years later. See:

Have you read the info in the link?

LCHF and IF work very well in combination, and help get you into "fat-burning mode" and this helps burn fat and prevents you feeling too hungry.

Start by cutting out (refined) carbohydrates and eating in a narrower eating window - e.g. do not eat after 18:00.

I think we are all putting on the poundage at the moment, I certainly am! I'm also being very naughty with the sweeties right now.

On losing weight, I don't go with all these named diets, and I think that as long as we don't have any specific dietary problems, such as dairy or gluten sensitivity, then we just need to eat less and exercise more, Hard to do in the current circumstances, especially if shielding , as I am.

It's probably not worth trying too hard until we are back to a place where we can get out and walk, or take other exercise, and establish our 'new' normal.

Cheers, Midori

Very good point about shielding.. but feel like in need to get it under control!

Might find that by the time you get back to 'Normal' life, you may be too frustrated with diets to try any more, that's why I have stopped for awhile.

Cheers, Midori
