Hi everyone,

Tucked away in my bookcase is a battered and yellowed little book, that's accompanied me around the world and back for the past 53 years, called 'Really, Nurse!' It was presented to me as a gift from my youth club when I left home to begin my nurse's training in the mid 60s.

It's a compilation of 'howlers' made by student nurses in their exams and I thought it might be fun to use a couple of them as quotations on this International Nurses' Day.

'The response to cold varies from person to parson'.

'The patient complained of panes in his head'.

'The nurse took great care to clean out the naval base on the patient's abdomen before his operation'.

Bless em! I too made my share of howlers in training! It's a busy job and never more-so than right now.

So I'm wishing everyone a great day today but especially nurses, the world over and past and present. It's an absolute vocation and one that we'd be lost without. πŸ™

Today is also International M.E Day which sadly often gets overlooked and misunderstood.

The two conditions can overlap and co-exist.

They did make me chuckle. I had to give my career up early due to health conditions. I stopped last year. My specialty was cardiology and I was trained in advanced life support. I really miss it. Being in work was my favorite place.😊😊

I think I can understand your feelings. I had to give up my career (teaching,) very suddenly four years ago following a brain injury that happened in hospital.

I have missed work every day since then.

Sending you all good wishes. πŸ™‚πŸŒΈ

I do hope you made a good recovery. I think recovering from brain injury or brain surgery, it can be a long process. xx

Thanks for your good wishes. I haven't really made any real recovery from my original injury. I wasl eft with multiple difficulties which have made it impossible for me to work. I was left very isolated and with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I have learnt some strategies to manage things better and have found the support of Headway invaluable. The hardest thing is knowing it all happened because of a consultant choosing not to follow correct procedures.

I am very glad that I found this site. It is good to know that I can reach out to others as I get very lonely.

Take care.πŸ™‚πŸŒΈ

I am sorry to hear that. Headway is good. Yes, this site is helping many get through these strange times at the moment with us being in isolation and so much change going on. It's a good place to be. xx

I find it very helpful. There are so many interesting people and their insights and stories to discover. πŸ™‚πŸŒΈ

It is a job you truly miss bobbybobb. So sorry your health forced you to retire early. I retired a long time ago, but I knew from the age of about 6 that that was what I was going to do and I never regretted a moment!😊

I was hit by about five conditions all in a row and from working full time and being busy at home and work, it was a big life changer. Still having lots of appointments and I'm hoping things will eventually settle down and symptoms will become more manageable. You have to look forward though and stay positive. xx

Excellent post for today Hidden and also well done to you, nurses work so hard. We watch 24 Hours in A&E and we watched Hospital COVID-19 last night, a real eye opener.

NHS and the Nurses you are awesome.πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸŒˆπŸ™

I had that book, too! Long gone, unfortunately.

Did You ever come across a little thing called 'Nursing Is...' I believe it was in the Nursing Mirror. It had little things like Nursing is- Having Keys. When was the last time you saw anyone with the Drugs Trolley on the bus? And Nursing is- Playing Morecambe and Wise with the cubicle curtains! and other assorted things. There was one about the Off Duty too.

Cheers, Midori
