Hate crimes

Hi there, due to the pandemic , there has been an increase in hate crimes against Asians. I personally hasn’t experience any yet but have been seeing them online. It makes me scared for my friends and family . Also myself as well. I also have a 7 month old at home too. I tried to focus on the positive, like seeing people and communities getting together and helping each other during tough times like this. But I seem to let the bad news get to me more. I even tried to not to read the news but can’t help it sometimes. What should I do?

Thanks!

I try not to watch the news either. I can understand your fears as the pandemic started in China. I think if it started in England people would have been avoiding more whites or Africa more blacks. But really since it’s everywhere I think it’s more accepted it’s everywhere it just got hit in an Asian country first & people wonder why. Most people are good and think of it this way Asian people showed us what we’re getting into and how they handled it out there. There’s always racist people in every culture. We just gotta focus on the good people and live with hope and embrace hope & goodness. I’ve seen the white privilege movement in America’s and I don’t like it. I did not grow up privileged due to my skin colour or given better life from it. My parents were immigrants and worked gave money to their parents till their 20’s dropped outta high school to do it to help the family financially they were the oldest in their families. I had to work at 11 years old babysitting to buy most of my own clothes. I consider white privilege to be racism due to that. So it’s a lesson that racism is out there but there’s a lot of good people out there that embrace race cultures and just want what we want ... peace communities so concentrate on that and deal with things as they come out way.

Thank you :)

Hi Kkakdugi,

If you have experienced any act against you which is racist in nature, and that of course includes anything arising from the current crisis, you should immediately contact the police. Absolutely, in UK, they have a strict protocol in place to protect you and to find the perpetrator, so there is no need to worry on that score. The vast majority of people are decent folk who would assist in some way if it was needed. In any case the streets are very quiet now so there is less opportunity for verbal or physical abuse, but I’m extremely sorry if you have suffered any, of any kind.

You can refuse to watch too much news by switching off all sources and choosing a trusted source for what you do watch. I now only watch one news broadcast a day at 6pm and avoid all discussion programs where misinformation gets broadcast, and anything on social media which is speculation or scaremongering. This is in your own hands. We choose what media we allow into our lives.

You’ll probably find that if you do just that, you will become less anxious.

If you are afraid of catching COVID19 then the best thing to do is to remain as safe as you can by following all government advice given.

And, after that, keep on being in touch with your friends and family and finding things to keep you happy and occupied. You have a lovely new baby to care for, who will help keep you occupied, I’m sure. This is a really difficult time but it won’t last forever. We have no control over how long it will take so we have no option but to do as we are doing and wait for happier times, which will come, so please try to live just one day at a time and keep you and your loved ones safe. Meantime you are always welcome here on this forum. It can help to pass some time and keep you in touch with friendly people who are also finding things tough. (And I’d say that was all of us 😄). Hope you have a happy day.

Hi there, I agree with all the above, if you are in the UK, hate crimes are taken very seriously by the police and dealt with swiftly. Crimes of this nature have a big impact on individuals and communities. It should not be tolerated under any circumstances. It should be reported immediately. We live in a diverse society, people who think it is OK to target ethnicity, religion, gender, disability or any other. minority group must know there are laws against this sort of behavior and will be punished harshly. I would limited the among of news you are watching if it is causing your anxiety levels to increase. 😊😊

Hello,

During the first few days of lock down I was scared because of plenty of news going on. It made me worried and even afraid of the uncertainties. Because of this, I limit my time watching the news and reading articles regarding the virus to prevent me from worrying. I prayed and I thank God for His peace after telling Him my concerns. Thank you for sharing. May God’s peace and strength be upon you.

Stay safe and keep us posted. We are here to uplift one another. I hope you will find comfort here. God bless.
