Update on humerus break plus one other

Day 15...I can now carefully roll over on my right side placing left bad arm carefully in comfortable position so big improvement . Can't sleep on back though or sitting up.If I hold something in left fingers to cut it with right arm, say an avocado, my left arm feels as if it's bouncing. Really unpleasant. Says in bumph, a floating sensation is common. Anyone else had this? Says in physio notes, hold arm by your side and lift it waist high. They must be joking. Can't straighten my arm let alone raise it. But bruising is improving and puffiness subsiding. 👍 X-ray on 5th.

You have my admiration. I can’t imagine how frustrating and uncomfortable that must be. I know you have no choice but to deal with it but…

I wish you a speedy journey to the day you can dance to YMCA!

Oh, Diana, I just saw this and my heart...and arm hurt for you! I went to Canada last year for my granddaughter's graduation from High School in Nova Scotia (I'm in the States). I fell from a motorized scooter and severed the humerus into two pieces: the ball joint and the rest of it. The hospital just put it in a sling to hang, and even an orthopedic surgeon advised the same. Back in the States, one week later, I had reverse shoulder replacement surgery. #1 piece of advice..rest, listen to books, get adequate pain med; I'm sensitive to heavy pain meds, cannot take asprin products at all, TRAMADOL 50 mg kept me comforatable.

Post-surgery, my arm sling was attached to a waistband, which kept it still; that helped. I know how it hurts🥹. Can you get something like that? I lived in my recliner for six weeks. I hope you have been able to get one. If you are in bed, is it comfortable? Let hubby care for you.

I know the swelling and bruising make you look like a prize fighter....but that will pass. I wouldn't try to do anything with a knife or something that required a firm grip. My hand looked like a roast, but I used to open and close and open, etc., and eventually, it went down. There was a large Hematoma on the upper arm....large, felt thick and spongy...but I used to ice it and it too has gone. It is a long healing. After six weeks, I went to therapy for four months...Now, I can lift it over my head and fling it around, and I don't have to put 'that arm' in first when dressing. That part of me is 100%. Please take all the help you can get at this point to heal. I'll be so anxious to hear about your x-ray on the fifth...I'm putting it on my Google calendar (not always at the computer as much these days)

I'm a GCAer.....on Actemra and Prednisone since 2019, can't remember how much I took in June 2023. An 82-year-old friend fell off a ladder about one month after my break and broke her humerus! The doctor was able to reconnect her two pieces with small metal plates. Her total healing was about four months.

My apologies for being so long...but when I say I 'feel' it...I'm reliving it. I hope you can take it easy, easy, easy.💞 It does get better!!!!

PS In the States, there are Veteran's clubs that also have a host of equipment for folks. Do you have anything like that available? It would be great if you could get one of those lift recliners that come all the way up. You can't grip to stand easily, either. I got good, restful sleep in my recliner. My best to you.

Oh poor you Grammy. You have come through a horrendous experience absolutely brilliantly and are an inspiration. At least my accident happened on my doorstep with hubby at home. Although I'm snapped in 2 places I'm so grateful I'm improving every day now. Bruising and swelling subsiding and I've got my hand back to normal. I can now sleep well if I'm careful on my good side with 2 drops of liquid morphine (so tiny it can hardly be seen on the spoon). Can't take anything else.Couldn't sleep upright either in bed or in recliner. Because arm is in a brace and sling, I can only wear button up blouses which Carer Hubby has to put on.

My niece, 65, just had a sling. Guess the brace holds things together better at my age. Went out grocery shopping 2 days ago. First exciting trip out! 😂 And son visiting to wash and set my hair today. Doing very simple wrist and finger exercises.

Holding steady on 2mg pred.

Onwards and upwards. Will post how hospital visit goes. Have a good day in US of A! ☺️🌞🌻

My situation is no more challenging than yours!! Shopping? It's excellent that you felt like it. It is wonderful to embrace the sun and air. I'm so glad you have the support and protection of a brace as well as the sling!!! It sounds like you are also surrounded with caring support, which is so important. Ah!!! The old button-up blouse trick...worn like a tent, right? I have a photo of my granddaughter hugging me last year; she in a prom gown, me in a 'tent.'

Happy to hear you see your arm 'shrinking' and best wishes on the 5th!💞

Yes, you've reminded me of that strange bouncy feeling in the arm - most disconcerting. It will pass! But like Grammy I can use my arm as if it was never broken!

Good to hear things are moving in the right direction for you.

You're the only person I've heard of with the bouncy ball feeling. Then I know it's a movement to be cautious about at least.👍

I think I recall wondering if it was the nerves being squashed by the swelling - but it was 4 years ago.....!

I unpicked the shoulder seam of a sleeveless dress, then husband helped me get into it and we used a nappy pin to close the seam. Height of punk fashion!

Take care. 🌻
