I joined the Joint Pain Programme at Nuffield about ten weeks ago and if you are able try to get a place. I must say I find it fantastic. Yes, my PMR has gone so maybe you are not ready but if you get on to it (in the UK) it is a slow way to build up strength and how you can improve your strenght and fitness. Everyone in the class has various issues - oa, back issues, knee issues - you name it. You take it slow and learn how the machines work and what works for you. I am definitely not a gym bunny type but it is really good. Use it or lose it. The programme is 12 weeks, twice a week for an hour, and you can use the gym for six months. All free. Nuffield Joint Pain Programme is a charity that works along with the gyms.
I highly recommend you to apply if you are interested.

I completely endorse your recommendation for the Nuffield Joint Pain programme. I have just finished the initial 12 week course and feel huge benefits from doing it. Above all it has taught me not to be fearful of doing regular, daily exercise. Until I started the programme, I worried that anything strenuous might provoke a flare. Now I’m using my free gym membership to continue the classes and am gradually adding in more types of exercise - aqua fit, Pilates and dance fit. I feel better than I have done for several years and count myself very fortunate to have this opportunity on my doorstep.
I did this too and found it very useful. It helped to give me confidence that I could do gentle exercise and that I could feel better as a result 😊
I would just add though - I don’t think the facilitator had much experience of autoimmune conditions- so anyone taking part should bear that in mind and only do what you feel comfortable with. And the overall structure made it easy to do that.
I did the Joint Pain Programme last year and highly recommended it. The first half hour was discussing health and second half was exercises to help mobility. We didn’t get to go in the gym until the last few weeks.
