Dodgy DEXA - shows osteoporosis

I am not adding to the recent discussion on DEXA scans and osteoporosis as it already has 99 replies. I seem to be playing steroid side-effect Bingo and am nearly a a Full House. I fell and broke my hip recently and a resulting DEXA has shown osteoporosis in the other hip, which less than 2 years ago was fine. I can only assume is down to the steroids, and of course the limited weight-bearing exercise resulting from PMR. My T score is 2.8 and the consultant has recommended a 5year Biphosponate prescription to my doctor.

So I am assuming that the advice from everyone will be to take the AA which will no doubt be offered which is what I inclined to do.

Question: Are there better options I could ask for? I took it before and tolerated it reasonably well after initial abdominal bloating

They scanned the right hip (left hip couldn't be done as has been replaced) and my spine. They only reported back the score of my right hip so I am assuming that the spine was OK. Does that mean I only have osteoporosis in my hip or is it an indication of bone health across my body?

I guess you mean reading was minus 2.8 ? But it would be useful to know what spine reading was as well and you’re correct on replaced hip,

Suggest you have a look at ROS site and maybe speak to one of their nurses on helpline for all options.

Yes, I do mean -2.8 of course, silly me. The letter only mentioned the hip so I am assuming that the spine was in normal range but I will see if it shows in my GP records/test results. I also have an appt booked with the GP next week on 5th. I have downloaded some resources from ROS and will speak to someone when I have read some of their advice. Thank you

I'm surprised they have suggested 5 years of oral AA. The infusions have a stablising effect quicker I discovered (within a few months), the oral versions take considerably longer. Fastest are the monoclonal antibodies like Prolia and the new Romosumab. Plus the 3 infusions at yearly intervals is very convenient!!

I will ask about that. I pretty much want the least side effects as I think cocktails of drugs don't suit me. I will also contact the ROS before I see the doctor as forewarned is forearmed
