Update on swollen eye, low potassium and low BP now hypothyroid issues.

Finally got an emergency blood test yesterday, results today, GP did not ask for potassium which my symptoms were an exact match to low levels! As expected with the high dose of steroids, results all over the place. Liver (Moorfields thought it was the steroids last week), kidneys now and thyroid TSH 0.29. All post covid which left me breathless. ON top of that urine infection brewing , as with all of the recent issues self treating with cranberry juice and sodium citrate.

I have done some research but I know that there will be a wealth of information from this forum. I understand that high dose steroids can impact thyroid function? Anyone else come across this? I'm back at Moorfields on 12th so hoping they will be able to clarify some of this for me.

Many thanks

GP not interested to talk to me until next week (sigh)

Corticosteroids MAY lower your TSH so it appears that thyroid function is normal when in fact you are hypothyroid.

I've never come across a doctor who doesn't order U&Es if they are doing bloods!!!!!

Just looked again (think I was in a bit of a pickle about it all), yes, potassium now 4.4 so got it back up with supplements and diet but think I'll drop the supplements now as BP v low. Having to self treat for the moment until Moorfields on Monday. Thanks PMRpro.

I recently had blood work done and my TSH was not in good range. My primary doctor did the test again along with other thyroid markers. All normal.Perhaps you might have the test redone By the way how low is your BP?

Wishing you the best. Jo

Hi Jo, thank you for replying, the results were all over the place, liver and Thyroid in particular. Possibly Covid or the steroids as I'm still on a big dose. BP got down to 110/56 so diastolic too low. I decided to stop one of my blood pressure meds over the last 2 days and this morning better 130/66. I wont rush to meds for Thyroid as hoping it will all settle down. Best wishes and stay well.
