I am on a 10 mg tapering dose of Pred with 20mgs weekly of Methaltrexate,. Mornings are hell … hands back bum all feel very painful I take my Pred as soon as I can 6:30 am and by 11 am I am feeling really well. Waling swimming biking …but those mornings are brutal…just getting out of bed is an exercise in determination . My point is the extremes are so great…..anyone else experience this?

Hi Darcy2000,

I am on a similar medication regime as you. I am currently on a tapering dose of 12,5 mg of prednisone and 20 mg of weekly methotrexate. I have experienced the same issues as you - discomfort and pain in the mornings until the prednisone kicks in. To help with this I split my dose of prednisone between am and pm. Currently I take 7.5mg in the morning and 5 mg at night. I take the doses at 7:30 am and 7.30 pm. This seems to help me. My rheumatologist suggested this. When I originally tapered to 12.5 mg she had the split as 10mg in the morning and 2,5 mg at night. This really didn’t work, so I adjusted to the above ratio and it helped. I am dropping to 10mg in 3 weeks so I’ll adjust dose again fingers crossed🙏

This may work for you. You could run it by your doctor and see if they agree.

😀

Thanks so much , That does make sense. I will definitely give it a try . I always wonder if this will keep on going as we drop our dose or we just have to live with it . I am 5 years in and a little fed up but feel lucky that compared to many others on this site the pain has been relatively mild except for mornings when I feel 90 years old

In previous post I did query your activity levels - you have to manage your PMR not just expect the meds to do it all.😊

As suggested might be worth splitting your dose of Pred… usual advice is 2/3rd am: 1/3rd late evening. The lower evening dose is enough to take the edge of the early morning pains, but hopefully not too much to disturb sleep.
