Stopping Prednisolone

Hi everyone,

I have been taking Prednisolone for 3.5 years with hardly any problems during reduction. I am now on .5mg and have been for the last 6 weeks with no problems. Just a quick question, should I just stop taking them now or wait a little longer?

Really up to you… but if you are a bit unsure maybe try a slower taper to get from 0.5mg to zero.

Easier on the body than just stopping.. and many have discovered that 0.5mg is doing a lot more than they realise.

Either follow one of tapering plans or just introduce zero on 1 day the first week, 2 days second week etc until you get to week 7 [spacing them initially - so say Sunday, then Sunday and Wednesday, then Sunday, Wednesday and Friday etc].

If an any time you feel unsure then repeat previous week or go back to 0.5mg every day.

Thanks DL. I’m currently on 2.5 and ready to continue tapering. Can you post the link to the really slow taper method. I’m encouraged as I haven’t had any issues tapering from 15 over the past two years but I’d rather be safe than sorry. Thanks

Thank you so much, it’s a little daunting to just stop! Will definitely take your advice.

Yes it is…. but as with tapering all the way through, if you go slowly you can always sort it out quickly.. 😊

I would do another step - using zero as the new dose in a slowed taper.

Have been on Prednisolone for 18 months, on slowly tapering dose. I always take it about 1-2 am (as recommended on this forum previously). I have a yoghurt beforehand, so the stomach is not empty.I am having some difficulty getting down from 7.5 mgm, not due to pain, more from general return of fatigue, appetite loss etc. I shall persevere, however as I am sure I am on the right track…. certainly thanks to all the advice, etc from this forum….. which is invaluable!

Sounds as if adrenals are coming into play - or rather not playing ball.. have a look at this - and just keep plodding on as you are -
