Sertraline and Dark Circles under Eyes.

I’ve been taking Sertraline and Gabapentin for a few months and have o developed really pronounced dark eye circles. I have lost weight as well. Has anyone who has/is taking these meds had the same reaction. The medicines are great but these side effects are hideous!

Are either of them affecting your sleep? That might explain the dark circles.

Weight gain looks like a side effect of gabapentin. How much weight have you lost? If it's more than just a few pounds, it's probably worth talking to someone.

The sertraline is most definitely. My GP has told me to reduce from 100 mg to 50mg. The side effect of Sertraline is weight loss which is good for me as I’m overweight! Just a few pounds! And he’s advised to taper me off Sertraline slowly over 4 weeks. I really don’t need it any more! Thank you. 😊

That's really good to hear

that’s interesting - I have pronounced dark circles under my eyes and take gabapentin. I developed very raised eye pressures while on Prednisolone and was immediate put on eye drops (Ganfort is the brand name) and it looks like this will be long term. I blamed the drops for the dark circles, but maybe it’s the gabapentin too. No significant weight change though.

Interesting too your comments! How long were you on the Gabapentin before you had the dark circles? I too had Bitamoprost (Ganfort) - that gave me a brown mark on the tear trough that’s only just going!! I started the Gabapentin last year - so I don’t think it’s that. I’m sure it coincided with the Sertraline which I started in February. I’m fine now and have begun a taper managed by my GP. Sertraline was very good at fixing the anxiety I had. It will be interesting to see if the Sertraline is the culprit.

Prednisone kicked off my glaucoma too and like you had very raised intra ocular pressures.

Sorry for my late reply, as far as I can remember the gabapentin and the Ganfort came pretty close together in autumn 2022 so difficult to know for sure, but I think the eye drops were closer to the dark shadows. I’m deviating from PMR/GCA (which it seems unlikely I ever had) but are you still taking both?

A neuro-opthalmologist put me on Gabapentin about three years ago to treat the optic neuritis in my right eye. I haven't noticed dark(er) circles. My father had them and I've had them since the 1960s....I'm not familiar with Sertraline....but the Gabapentin actually improved my visual field. My best..💞

I hadn’t heard of optic neuritis before (or neuro- ophthalmologists either). Has it resolved? Presumably you no longer take gabapentin. Take care.

I suffered permanent damage to the left optic nerve and 'a few pale spots' on my the right optic nerve....caused by lack of blood supply years ago. My opthalmologist referred me to him saying, "I'm just an opthalmologist''....don't find many modest doctors but I've met a few thankfully. I'm still on gabapentin and suspect I will be for some time or at least as long as I'm on this side of the daisies. I think I read there are about 200,000 cases in the States so it isn't common. I feel fine...take care.💞

Thank you Grammy80 for your reply. I’ had an eye operation on Friday. I have pseudo exfoliation syndrome of left eye which has caused havoc since 2022. This recent op was the iris sticking to the cornea. Causing my pupil to enlarge. I’m feeling ok. I hope you are well and thank you for your interesting posts. I think it must' be the iopidine eye drops that’s causing it. If it lack of sleep I’m making up for it now post anaesthetic! 💐💐

Rest...rest...I hope your surgery went well and the Doctors could do all they hoped. What do you thing? The sound of it made me shiver....sleep and be well. My best.💞

Thant you Grammy80 for your lovely text. 🥰. All went well. Am still rather tired but the eye is ok - vision is a bit better already and it’s 5 days post op. Fortunately I had general anaesthetic and it was fine although the anaesthetist was rather arrogant! Glad I was asleep! I m resting and thank you for your support. 💝

Great, that all sounds promising. I'm glad you had general anesthesia too! I can be really brave if I'm sleeping!! Just the way I like it. Take your time...💞

Thank you! ❤️ I can cope too when I’m fast asleep! Yes am resting. Am glad the sun is shining this afternoon! Not very nice weather this morning! And had to have a new back door fitted too. I left him to it and went to rest! He was very nice and professional. Did a great job too!
