I’ve just had a raft of blood tests as I am suffering with terrible itching and rashes which I understand are quite common whilst reducing steroids (currently 1mg). Everything came back normal except serum ferritin of 630 ug/L
My doctor marked all the results on-line as satisfactory but this result seems very high, normal range being 5 to 204.
Has anyone else had a high result like this, should I be concerned?
It is normally considered serum ferritin levels greater than 200 ng/mL in women and greater than 300 ng/mL in men to be abnormal. However, a large percentage of the general population has a serum ferritin level between 200 and 1,000 ng/mL. If your doctor is happy that should be OK. You could always check with them if you are worried.
Raised ferritin can also be an acute phase reaction indicating inflammation in your body. It was the only marker I had that was raised.
High Serum Ferritin could indicate Haemochromatosis but surely the doctor would know that.
My Serum ferritin is also raised well above "normal range", but my Doctor does not seem concerned about it. He is just "watching" it.
