my dentist now informs me that having digitised my tooth X-ray and reconsidered, it could be saved with root canal treatment by a specialist, cost £800 to £1000, starting with a consult of £100. Alternatively I could proceed with extraction, however he will not do it, he would refer me to an NHS hospital for it.
I have decided to try and save my tooth.

I would invest the £100 on the specialist's opinion. However, I had to have a tooth extracted at hospital as it broke while my GDP was attempting root canal treatment.......! Depending which tooth it is and why your own dentist is reluctant to do the work himself, make sure you discuss the pros & cons with the specialist, including how much you will have to pay if they can't save it!
Having said all that, I have had many root canal procedures and crowns that have been no problem at all.
good for you. I was quite £800 to do one (tooth trouble for 6+ years, 7 infections, nobody would remove,,,all due to alendronic acid). But then it was impossible to do that. Hospital wait here is 6 to 12 months. After many dentists refused to extract mine, I found a private dental surgeon. She removed it for £350 last Thursday, I’m very bruised & not sure it’s healing as it should. May have to go & see her tomorrow, & then a wait to see if I get necrosis of the jaw. I would save it if you’re not having repeat infections or other trouble. Oh, & one of the people who wouldn’t do my extraction was the hospital surgeon I was referred to!!
