I was told I had osteopenia whist workng as nurse in the xray department ( a dexa scan machine was new so all females were able to have a scan to give experience to the radiographers who had been trained in osteoporosis and scanning, I must admit I did have several scans under this 'scheme' and eventually was diagnosed with osteoporosis - a letter was sent to my doctor( this was pre my first brush with PMR.) I am now 79 yrs, still on the adcal and more or less managing my second round of PMR myself ( which I did do the first time with the help of PMRGCA SW which I joined and helped with the admin side). I asked my GP if I could have a dexa scan to check what was going on and was told at 78 ( at the time ) that I was too old. Does anyone know if there is a cut off age for this even though you do actually have osetoporosis, Thank you for this site I really take note of everything that is written! and am very envious of the interested of other peoples GPs. I was struggling again 5mg so took the pred up to 7mgs, now I have resorted to 10 mgs and am ok! Will start the reducing soon- sorry forthe long spiel.

Hello there. You asked the same question some months ago so here is the link and this particular query is addressed by PMRPro about half way down the replies.

There is no upper limit for having a Dexascan and women over 65 are encouraged to have one.

Do not allow yourself to be dismissed. There is no upper age limit for a DEXA scan and it has particular relevance for you. If you are in Britain, refusing you this test could be age discrimination and you are protected by Law. Don’t apologise for your post. It is clear and articulate and necessary for our group.

Thank you , i have decided to try one of the other doctors in the surgery as she was very helpful /and understanding when i started up with PMR for the second time. I am ok with what I am doing but it is reassurance that I feel one needs every so often .
