finally been able to pen this. It's bad enough having PMR and GCA curtailing my cycling and fitness. to put down Rex was the final straw. For all who have lost.
It broke my heart to see you ill
Unable to play and run at will.
Off your food, never known.
In such pain but never shown.
To cradle you gently,
that look doth rent me.
Your devotion given,
selfless love, I'm riven.
Snug and warm fireside
Would I could heal inside,
that which heralds your end.
I'll stop this pain, you're my friend.
Could you but speak
I'd no sanction seek.
Forgive and bless the course I take.
It was mine in grief to make.
I'll never know another.
A special kind of lover.
Kind, gentle, always fun.
Never more with me to run.

We lost our lovely dog 2 years ago and still miss him. Irreplaceable. Lucky to have had him for those 10 wonderful years but oh the pain of letting him go. I feel your sorrow.
Our Golden Cocker had 70 puppies and dreadful eye problems before we rescued her from “ the breeder “. The way she looks at me sometimes really pulls the heart strings.
So sad for you on the loss of your beloved pet. Our pets do become our children. We had to put down my late son’s older dog Monday afternoon. It was heart-rending. Your poem was, again, so perfect.
So moving , you have a wonderful way of expressing your feeling which those of us who have been there can totally empathise with. Beautifully composed and written.🫂🫂
It’s usually a decision, those of us who are very lucky to have a furry companion at our side, have to make at some point in the future. My so-called Labradoodle (who, after a DNA test proved to be a mongrel) will be 7 years old soon and is the goofiest, but most loving dog I’ve ever had, and sadly he’s the only one I’ve had because I only retired at the point of which I got him. He was my retirement present. Sleeps by my bed and gets in my bed, 2-3 times a night and it’s the best hot water bottle ever. I feel for everybody who has made the decision, and who will have to make this decision at some point in the future. It rips your heart out.
A beautiful, heartfelt tribute that will resonate with so many of us.
Our lovely 4-legged companions bring us such a lot of joy and a level of devotion & unconditional love that's given so freely, that when they're no longer with us, the void that's left is impossible to fill.
My heart goes out to you cycli. Sending much love.
thanks Kendrew. As always your posts are helpful and supportive. Originally I wanted a Rhodesian Ridgeback but when Rex came along as a pup I never desired another. He was simply perfect in every way.
Our pets are completely non-judgemental & accepting of us, despite all our flaws, and although we know there will come a day when they're no longer with us, it's so very painful when they're not.
My beautiful cat adopted my husband and I by turning up in our garden the day we returned from our honeymoon. She wouldn't leave and despite our best efforts we couldn't find her owner so we had her & loved her for 15 years. Eventually I had to take her to be put to sleep. She was sick and in a lot of pain, but I'll never forget the soulful way she looked at me as I held her whilst the drug was administered. It was like she was saying "thankyou".
I try not to dwell on that day too much....but I do constantly like to think about her funny little antics, her willful personality and her lovable character. All traits that brought us so much joy.
Happy days.
You'll always miss Rex but the pain hurts less as time moves on.
I’m so sorry for the loss of Rex - it’s the hardest, kindest thing we can do for them. Speak his name often, he inhabits so many memories, look back with a smile at them. God bless Rex - a beautiful poem in tribute
Such a difficult decision, but the right one. I wish humans can be treated so kindly. Your Rex was so fortunate to have you. Please take care of yourself now.
Oh cycli I'm so sad. Right there with you. Lost my little cat Missus in June. She was 15 and sicker than me. Such a comfort to me she was though. Hugs to you.
Very poignant indeed. I lost my Daisey cat several months ago, she sensed I was ill and laid closely against my head on the pillow. Before diagnosis of PMR for 3 months when I crawled up the stairs on hands and knees she sweetly went up the stairs 2 at a time and waited for me until I tapped her bottom to move on. I reminded myself recently that the loss is just a reminder to love the people and animals we care about as much as we can while we have the gift of their presence.
It is apparent in your poignant words how much you loved your pet Rex. Death ends a life….not a relationship. Keep close those memories of your time with Rex as they will serve as comfort during this difficult time. I’m so sorry for your loss cycli!
Oh Cycli i very much feel your pain.I had to take my sixteen year old Westie Molly to the vets just this Monday. She was very frail and not eating yet i felt so much guilt taking her.My other westie who is fifteen doesn't know what to do with himself.Even as i write this i am welling up.
That was a lovely poignant poem and i wish you all the best in your life.
Such a sweet poem in honor of Rex.He was loved and cared for all his life.Happy to be in a home that he was safe.I know the feeling when our pets get ill.My husband and had to discuss what to do with our 15 yr old cat that needed a tooth pulled. The procedure was over 2,000 dollars. So we re taking her tomorrow cause we felt she had more life to live.We love her like you did Rex.The day will come where we too will have to put her down. Its a heartbreaking thing to do.I feel for the sadness u are feeling!!! He was lucking to have the love u gave him♥️
Heartbreaking cycli. Some years since we lost our beloved pets and still can’t bear to look at a Border Lakeland terrier without tears. We ‘borrow’ our Son’s beautiful cocker spaniel everyday instead while they work. Beautiful words, so sad. 🌺
I am so very sorry for your loss! I have been there on two occasions in my lifetime and each time it has broken my heart. My thoughts are with you at this time and my heart goes out to you 💔 💐
Such a loss. We lost both our dogs last year. One was 12 and sick, the other was young, only 6 but she got cancer. We still miss them every single day. The younger one was the hardest, as she seemed so young and healthy, then all of a sudden.... What a shock. Still not over her. I totally understand your pain and what a lovely poem.
I have always believed it is a great honour to be able to make the decision that ends the humiliation of old age and decrepitude for our beloved elderly pets. So sorry for your loss cycli. Stay brave and strong, 🥲
