Thank you all you lovely people for your replies, they have all been really helpful. Yesterday I had a telephone consultation with my rheumatologist who said it may be TMD, which some of you have already suggested, or possibly a problem with my neck. However he has ordered some blood tests which I have booked tomorrow at my GP surgery, and also an eye exam, just to be on the safe side. He actualy phoned me back this morning to see how I am feeling and to ensure that I was able to arrange the appointments. In the meantime I gave myself an extra pillow last night as an experiment and it did seem to help some so I'll keep that in place. He also suggested co-codomal for the pain, (I'm one of these people who never usualy take pain killers), he said this woul help the musles relax as well as keep the pain at bay. So I'll let you know the results when they come in. Thank you.

I suppose that removing the pain might lead to the muscles relaxing - but cocodamol is not a muscle relaxant as such. Be careful you don't get constipated - that is very likely with cocodamol.
Might be worth looking at sternocleidomastoid muscle then.
