Morning all, hope you can help me , I'm travelling to Kenya in November I've just seen on the government website that if your taking steroids ie prednisolone you maynot be able to have the yellow fever vaccination. Is this correct has anyone travelled to Kenya with this issue. I'm taking 6mg a day . Many thanks .

Hi I read the same thing this week,

Contact the infectious Disease department at your local hospital

That’s where l had to go for my yellow fever long before l had PMR.

Here is the relevant section in the ‘bible’ of vaccination in the UK. It says high doses of steroids are contraindicated but doesn’t state what high is thigh 6mg is probably not. It’s a way down the page under Contraindications. With yellow fever vac there is also a rare bad side effect in the 60’s+ age group for the first vaccination. Are you going to an area which has yellow fever? Sometimes it says it’s needed if you are coming from an area with YF which makes it sound like you need it but might not. I would go to a travel clinic and have a full risk assessment done.

Best to ask a proper experienced travel clinic. You don't always HAVE to have all the jabs but the risk is that if you are somewhere and there is an outbreak SOME countries may refuse you access - either to transit if it applies or coming home to the UK until you have fulfilled a quarantine.

you ought to be alright at 10 mgs or under Pred dose. Above that there is a danger of infection from the injection. When I last went to Kenya - years ago - I would not have been allowed to travel without the certificate. Obviously you need qualified advice on the current situation from your doctor.
