I was due to have my hip replacement on 17th August, got to the hospital saw all the relevant people. A Dr came to put an arrow on my leg and asked me how long had i had the scratch on my hip ? I told him i wan not aware i had one ! He took a photo of it, i am not joking when i say it was not even an inch long ,you could hardly see it. He said he was going to get the surgeon to have a look. To my horror the surgeon said he could not operate until the scratch had gone. At this point i was in tears as i explained it could be the Pred that caused it as my skin is thin in some parts. He was very kind and explained it was exactly where he was going to make the incision ! and that he would not take the risk incase of infection. A very kind nurse to me into a side ward and made me a cup of tea. i got myself together and went back home. I asked her where i was on the list that morning, i was second talk about rubbing salt in the wound. Anyway im back on the fast track list i scratch went days ago, so near yet so far .🌷

Just an update .
Very disappointing-but surgeon cannot take risks -hopefully you won’t have to wait too long…
Oh no! That really came out from the left field! How disappointing and sooo near. They are right though; what might be a superficial infection could be introduced deep into your body if they cut it. Have they swabbed it? Prob will check for MRSA too.
How absolutely gutting but it does show that they take meticulous care and that is what you want.
So sorry to hear that. I had a similar thing happen a few years ago. I cut my leg whilst at a swimming pool and my surgery scheduled a week later was postponed. You do psych yourself up for these things and it’s so disappointing but as you say better safe than sorry. Hang in there it will happen soon🌸
Oh how disappointing! Hugs. All that emotional effort for nothing ...
Better wrap that leg in cotton wool for next time! And no risky hobbies
What a really rotten thing to happen. Particularly when you have built up to an op. Surgeons are really so careful of infection as it can have devastating consequences and they really become quite paranoid.
Exactly the same thing happened to a friend of mine but it was only a red mark and it was in her shin, nowhere near her hip. The good thing is she didn’t have to wait much longer & everything went well. Good luck x
So disappointing. Everything happens for a reason and lets hope the surgery will go super smoothly when it happens.
Oh! so sorry Viv54, I know exactly how much mental effort is needed to get yourself up the stairs/lift into the room to wait for the op. I've had both my hip replaced in the last 18 months and really suffered intense anxiety the first time around (had to phone in my BP readings from home as they were off the roof at the pre-op). It isn't as awful as you dread, and the surgeon has only your best interests at heart. I was walking without crutches or sticks 6 weeks after each op. I can walk 3 miles now, dance with my little grandchildren, so just look forward to it, do the exercises after absolutely religiously with a little walking every day and you'll get there!
I had my knee replaced 4 months ago and my pre- op instructions were no gardening, no shaving legs etc etc two weeks before operation! They absolutely do take it very seriously indeed. Hope you have your op soon.
A bit late responding as usual sorry. I just wanted to say that I am waiting for 2 knee replacements, the first is within grasping distance but has evaded me twice already. The first time I had a small ulcer on the operation lower leg so had to wait several months more for it to finally heal. Then the second time I had a rather large hole in my temple after an invasive mole was removed, so several months more for that to heal too, both of these picked up at the pre-op stage. I am now on my 3rd and final pre-op with the all clea , so now pestering the schedulers every couple of weeks to see if I am on the list.... however .... no idea how I have done this but I have a small graze on the operating leg again! I have been housebound now for over 2 years with my knees being so bad and use crutches around the house and a motorised chair outside, somehow no matter how careful I am, I always seem to knock myself. I am now tending to this little blip in the hope it quickly heals, I don't want them to have another excuse. The longer I wait the more of a liability I become!
