thrush……again

For the past three months I’ve been trying to get rid of a bad taste in my mouth. The roof of my mouth feels like I’ve burned my mouth on a too hot pizza. The middle of my tongue is coated the tip is somewhat red.

My dentist said X-rays show no infection. GP looked in my mouth and said I may have thrush and prescribed Nystatin which seemed to help a little bit but now the taste is as bad as ever if not worse. Even my morning coffee tastes horrible.

I’m also trying to get new pain sorted.

I’m 80 with GCA/PMR and on 9mg of prednisone. In the US.

There is something called Burning Mouth Syndrome. I think it may be a medical excuse for they don't really know what the problem is though!

thank you piglette. I will check this out. Another cause it mentions could be acid reflux and I definitely have that.

That is probably the most common reason for a foul taste in the mouth if it isn't managed well.

I suffer acid reflux and foul tastes in mouth, the two are definitely linked. I use a salt gargle due to constant sore throats caused by Stills (RD) but the foul taste remains and my mouth is always an angry red and looks infected but never is. A recent period on Omeprazole reduced the reflux, sore throat and foul tastes but have all returned now ceased.

Hi I get it from dry powder inhaler and find a strong mouth wash twice a day helps.

You should always rinse your mouth with water after using an inhaler

Unfortunately, burning mouth syndrome and recurring thrush of the mouth and throat can often go hand in hand and can be quite common flare ups for people on certain medications or low immunity.I was getting it quite regularly and had to take antifungal medication for a month to get rid off it .

Unfortunately, you also need to remove any fungal foods from your diet to help , including yeast, mushrooms but also things that can have fungals in them like coffee , rice , flour , peanuts and the skins of fruit.

Removing spicy , sugary and acidic foods while it heals is also important both to stop the effect it has on the tongue , but also to help reduce stomach acid that might add to the problem at night.

Drinking water regularly through the day and during meals is even more important than usual. Unsweetened versions of Green Tea are good to drink , hot or cold , for both issues because it's both soothing but also has antibacterial and antioxidant properties that help in healing. Having portions of live probiotic natural yoghurt before meals which you can flavour to make it more enjoyable is helpful to soothe the mouth and reduce stomach acid.

It is also good to make a bottle of plain green tea to use as a mouth wash after meals and snacks and before brushing because standard mouth washes can add to the pain and burning . This was a tip I got originally from my dentist. He also suggested swapping to a softer toothbrush mouthwashing then flossing before cleaning.

One of the biggest causes of thrush , especially in the mouth , and burning mouth syndrome are vitamin deficiencies. Very low , borderline or deficient levels of Iron / Ferritin, Folates and Vitamin B 12 are some of the commonest causes for recurrent thrush and burning mouth syndrome because of the effect it has on your sugar balance and your immune system.

I have noticed myself that I haven't had an incident of these mouth issues since my treatment for B 12 and Folate Deficiency was found.

If you haven't had blood tests for these vitamins and Iron in the last three months I would strongly suggest that you ask your GP to do them before you start taking the supplements.

Even if you levels are in normal range but on the low side they may still be just too low for you with the effect that medications may have on your immunity, so it is worth increasing your levels with a daily supplement.

The effect steroids and various other meds have on your insulin resistance and sugar balance can also be a cause. Recurrent Thrush and BMS are also the earliest signs of things like Prediabetes and Type1 and 2 Diabetes in Adults. So if you haven't had your Diabetes blood test yet , or recently , it would be a good time to order that too.

Hope it clears up soon I know how irritating and sore it can be, take care , Bee

A course of Undecylenic Acid from Thorne labs got rid of my candida (which caused the thrush) and when I began making and drinking kefir my GERD and IBS disappeared. This was 17 years ago. I still make kefir and have no tummy issues ever.

thank you papadapdoo, Making kefir, is it complicated? I will check out the Undeclynic Acid.

Are you a jazz musician?, (your name) 😀

Jazz lover, not player. Here's the medicine I took to clear up the candidiasis (follow directions carefully if you use it)--thorne.com/products/dp/form.... As for kefir, it is very simple, takes less than a minute each day, once you've started. You start with "grains" (looks like baby cauliflower) which you put in milk. When the milk begins to separate, you have kefir. You fish out the grains with a plastic spoon and pop them into a new batch of milk (a pint is good - any kind of milk). Drink the kefir. If you don't like the taste, blend a banana into it. [Store kefir is made from powder and is short on probiotics.] Kefir is pretty wonderful. It comes from the Caucasus mountains where people live a long time.

Thank you papa D

Thorne is a good company, I’ve used their products before. I have a holistic doctor that I haven’t been able to see lately, off track on my diet too.

One more question - where do you get the kefir starter grains?

papadapadoo profile image
papadapadoo in reply toMstiles

Folks who make kefir are always happy to share grains (the grains grow rapidly so there are always extra). Or you can get them from Amazon. This source is reliable: amazon.com/Milk-Kefir-Grain...

I found using salt water rinse with mouth hygiene and after meals really helped. Simple but effective.

Mstiles profile image
Mstiles in reply toKarenjaninaz

thank you, simple is good at this point in my life. With mouth hygiene do you mean after flossing and brushing?

Yes; the salt water kills bacteria by “blowing up” their cell walls.
